Summer-maxxing and Getting Things in Order for Winter by Justin Arndt

Some of us spent the summer relaxing our way down rivers, others grinded out a job to make ends meet, and yet others chased the “eternal winter.” Whatever it is you spent your summer doing, the inevitable Rocky Mountain winter is drawing near. And whether you’re excited, or you have some other, completely valid emotion, the time for ski season will be here before you know it.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha (of which I’d bet there are some in your ski school) have a term for making the most of something: “maxxing.” For instance, one may enjoy the rest of the summer by “maxxing” in certain activities that make you happy. Sunmaxxing, Bikemaxxing, Rivermaxxing, Travelmaxxing, to name a few.

Summer’s gonna be gone soon, replaced by shorter days and frozen precipitation in the mountains. I would suggest you make a list of what’s important before the snow starts flying. Do you want to get a few more bike rides in? What about that long-distance trail run you’ve been meaning to do? How about the birdhouse you’ve been meaning to put up in your garden? Go summermaxx!!

The World of Snowsports is Coming to Our Backyard

In April 2027, Interski comes to Vail, Colorado, bringing the international snowsports education community together in the United States for the first time since Aspen hosted the event in 1968.

Held every four years, Interski brings together national teams, instructors, trainers, and educational leaders from around the world to share ideas, demonstrate teaching and technical approaches, and help shape the future of skiing and snowboarding.

For PSIA-AASI Rocky Mountain members, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity happening right here in our own division. We have the chance to welcome the world to Colorado while showcasing the talent, professionalism, and passion of our instructors and educators on an international stage.

You can help make it happen by joining TEAM27.

TEAM27 is the PSIA-AASI Education Foundation's donor community supporting Interski Vail 2027. Every contribution helps us deliver a world-class event while investing in snowsports education, professional development, and the people who dedicate their careers to teaching and growing our sports.

This is our region. Our profession. Our opportunity to welcome the world.

Newsletter Article: We're Ready for Winter by Dana Jacobs

This morning felt like fall.

It was cool and raining after months of hot, dry weather, and on my drive to the office I found myself thinking about winter, and about you.

I started thinking about everything that happens behind the scenes during the summer to get Rocky Mountain ready to serve our members when the snow finally arrives.

People often ask me, “What do you do all summer?” The answer is: a lot!

Rocky Mountain hosts hundreds of events each season, and one of our most important goals is simple: to provide you with the best experience and the best service we possibly can. That has always been our goal, and it continues to drive the work we do.

Our team spends the summer carefully planning our calendar of events and their locations by working with school managers and looking at what has worked well in the past. Our discipline committees spend countless hours refining courses, updating course descriptions, improving processes and preparing our education staff. We review everything from registration to policies and procedures, always asking ourselves: How can we make this better for our members?

And we aren’t doing that work in isolation.

Check out our recent newsletter article - Beyond the Board and the Skis: Thriving in the Dual-Discipline Children's Specialist Environment by Stacey Gerrish.

"One of the greatest advantages of a dual-discipline assessment is the opportunity to learn alongside colleagues with different experiences.

Alpine instructors often discover new ways of explaining movement after observing snowboard educators. Snowboard instructors gain fresh perspectives from alpine professionals. These conversations strengthen everyone.

Rather than viewing the other discipline as unfamiliar territory, view it as an opportunity to expand your own understanding of movement, teaching, and learning.

One of the questions I hear most often from Children’s Specialist candidates is, “How do I prepare for the dual-discipline assessment?”

Congratulations to Rachel Channell for receiving a scholarship this season!

"Thanks to the Daryle Bogenrief Memorial Scholarship, I completed my Adaptive I exam. Expanding my skill set and technical foundation has better equipped me to help bridge the gap between ability and opportunity. I’m excited to continue my career in instruction by helping a more diverse range of skiers to find confidence and independence on the mountain."
