Unmedicated birth doesn’t just happen—it takes preparation. 🤱

For most of human history, women grew up surrounded by birth. They watched mothers, sisters, cousins, and neighbors labor. Birth wasn’t hidden away behind hospital doors—it was part of life, and women learned simply by being present. 🤝

Today, many of us never witness a birth until it’s our own.

So if unmedicated birth doesn’t feel “natural,” that doesn’t mean your body isn’t capable. It means you’re entering an experience that our culture often leaves us unprepared for.

Preparing for an unmedicated birth is about so much more than having a birth plan.

It’s about learning to:
✨ Trust your body.
✨ Stay present through discomfort.
✨ Breathe with intention.
✨ Move instinctively.
✨ Understand the physiology of labor.
✨ Practice relaxation before you ever need it.

Epidurals are a tool—not a failure or trophy. 🏆

Birth isn’t about proving how much pain you can tolerate. It’s about bringing your baby into the world safely while feeling informed, supported, and empowered. 💪

A well-timed, thought-out, epidural can be an incredible tool, especially when:
✨ Your body needs complete relaxation after hours of intense labor.
✨ You’ve gone without sleep and need meaningful rest before pushing.
✨ Pain and tension are making it difficult for your body to relax and continue progressing.
✨ You simply decide it’s the right choice for you.

An epidural isn’t “giving up.” It’s one option in your birth toolbox.

Beth was a 3rd time mom who had 1 previous medicated birth and 1 previous unmedicated birth. In our prenatal meetings she shared having a strong desire to go unmedicated, however, she had an even stronger passion for her golden hour to be preserved (1 hour immediately after giving birth).

At about 38 weeks pregnant, after a couple of higher blood pressure readings & her baby having a couple of decels, her care team suggested she go to the hospital for prolonged monitoring. I was able to join Beth and offer emotional & educational support to her as she ultimately made the hard decision to be induced that evening. She decided to go home first to: gather her belongings, shower, and bond with her little family one last time before welcoming a new addition.

She settled in her labor room for the night, and around 3am the next morning, she had 1 round of cervical cytotec. After laboring pretty hard throughout the night, Beth and her care team decided it would be best to do another round of cytotec and place a foley balloon. After the balloon was placed, her contractions began to feel much more intense, so Beth declined the second round of cytotec. At 10:48am, Beth’s water broke on its own, and I arrived shortly after to begin comfort measures. Upon my arrival, Beth was laboring in the shower, so her husband and I observed from afar, offering support when needed.

Things began to feel much more intense as the balloon was making its way out. Beth started to think of an epidural. She felt she hadn’t had time to mentally and physically prepare for an unmedicated birth, and the idea of getting to relax for the rest of her labor, have her a sense of comfort. After chatting more, she ultimately decided that was the right move for her. By 1:15pm you were out of the shower, and had decided to get the epidural. Her partner and I offered physical emotional support as she waited for her epidural.

Beth’s balloon came out at 2:18pm, her cervix was 5-6cm 70% effaced -2 station. After some much needed rest and to EVERYONE’S surprise Beth was complete and ready to push at 4:48pm! Only 10 minutes later, Beth had brought her daughter earthside. She was able to have immediate skin to skin, delayed cord clamping, and a completely undisturbed first hour with her daughter on her chest. 🤍

Many parents-to-be spend months preparing for baby, but only a few hours preparing for labor, delivery, and recovery.

Let’s talk induction. It’s typically never on anyone’s birth plan, but no matter the reason for an induction, you have options here too.

Some preferences for induction can be:
- Cervical ripeners and a manual dilation catheter (what??? 😅)
- Cervical ripeners help to make your cervix soft for labor
- Foley balloon is a catheter that gets inserted into your cervix to put pressure on the cervix to hopefully dilate it a bit
- These are good beginning options to prep your cervix before starting pitocin
- “Low and slow” pitocin
- Pitocin is NOT the same as oxytocin, BUT starting pitocin at a low dosage and slowly upping the dosage, can allow your body to adjust and react accordingly.
- If at any time the pitocin is making your contractions too intense you can ALWAYS ask for the pitocin to be turned down or off for a little bit.
- Movement
- As long as there are no health concerns, you can still move around during labor and use movement to your advantage.
- Even if you are bound to your bed, you can still get into many different positions (this is where your doula comes in handy!!).
- Manually breaking your water
- This is a pretty routine procedure for inductions, but often times can create much more discomfort for mama. You can always decline this until you feel it is the right time for you and baby.
These are just a few of the many preferences you can have during your induction. Whether you chose to schedule an induction, or you are being induced for a health concern, you can still have a say so in your treatment and care! The more you know, mamas!
