This is why we stabilize our burl.

We checked the resin this morning, and the level had dropped an inch and a half overnight.

That means this crazy piece of burl is soaking up a LOT of resin.

All those cracks, voids, and little spaces in the wood are taking it in.

And we’re not done yet.

We’ll let it continue soaking and see just how much resin this piece will take before it’s ready to cure.

Burl can be unpredictable… but that’s also what makes it so much fun to work with.

After three days under full vacuum, it’s time to release the vacuum and see just how much resin the wood has pulled in.

Watch the level in the tank drop when we release the vacuum.

That resin has been getting pulled deep into all those little voids and spaces in the burl.

And this is why we don’t rush the stabilizing process.

Three days under vacuum… and then we let the wood do its thing.

Pretty cool to watch, but this is just one step in turning a wild piece of burl into something we can build a net from.

his is where the stabilizing process comes in.

We start with a piece of burl that has all kinds of crazy character, but it’s often soft, fragile, and full of voids.

We pull the air out and replace it with stabilizing resin, then cure it to strengthen the wood from the inside out.

After that, we can cut it, shape it, sand it, and turn all that wild burl character into something that can live on one of our nets for years.

It’s a pretty cool transformation—from fragile piece of burl to a rock-solid piece of usable wood.

And honestly… this is one of our favorite parts of working with burl.
