I was first blessed to play this great game with a wooden racket back in the spring of 1990 as a Smyrna Middle School Panther. Eventually I put tennis as my primary sport and worked hard to earn the #1 seed as a Smyrna High School Bulldog. Playing recreationally through college and adulthood has helped me realize how much I enjoy the tennis crowd and meeting tennis people. Winning USTA tournaments as an adult is always an annual goal and a highlight of my year. I've coached public school teams, private school racquet clubs, and given personal lessons. I've passed USTA, PTR, and NFHS coaching/instructing courses. I'm a member of the United States Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry as a professional instructor (which means I'm certified and insured to teach tennis). I've even stepped on court with tennis greats, like world ranked #4 Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland! (I got to squeegee rain off her practice court!)

Sparta Tennis Claims Region 3A Runner-Up; Warriors and Warriorettes Show Championship Character

SPARTA, TN — The White County Warriors and Warriorettes walked off the courts this week with more than just a trophy; they left with the respect of the region. In a hard-fought Region 3A final against the Signal Mountain Eagles, both Sparta squads secured the Runner-Up plaque, proving that while the scoreboard favored the opponent, the heart of the match belonged to White County.

Signal Mountain took the titles with a 5-0 win over the boys and a 4-0 victory over the girls. However, the final scores don’t tell the full story of a night defined by grit, defensive brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to sportsmanship in the face of adversity.

Standout Performances at the #2 Spot
The highlight of the evening came from the #2 singles positions, where juniors Ethan Wiles and Tegan Rittenberry pushed their opponents to the limit.

Tegan Rittenberry: Faced with an aggressive offensive opponent, Rittenberry put on a defensive show. The highlight of her match was a stunning "thread-the-needle" passing shot; after sprinting 30 feet to reach a short-angled volley, she flicked a winner down the line that left the crowd in awe and her opponent applauding. Her high-speed, high-percentage first serve remained a weapon throughout the contest though she lost to an admirable opponent in the end.

Ethan Wiles: Wiles earned the distinction of being the only Warrior to take a set from his opponent on the night. Relying on smart drop shots and a relentless attack on second serves, Wiles dominated early with a 6-2 lead. He was inches away from a straight-sets victory, leading 5-3 at deuce, before a controversial call shifted the momentum. His all-court play and smart shot placement still held strong though eventually falling in a third set tiebreak.

First and foremost, I want you to hear this: **We are already incredibly proud of you.** Tomorrow, when we host Signal Mountain High School at WCHS, it’s about more than just a match. It’s the culmination of every practice, every drill, and every ounce of effort you’ve put in since last October. This is the goal we’ve been chasing. We are rested, we are prepared, and we are ready to test our training.

White County Tennis Completes Sweep of District 6
SPARTA, TN — It wasn’t just a win on Monday; it was a total Sparta narrative.

On April 27th, the White County Warriors and Warriorettes didn't just participate in the Class A Region 3 District 6 tournament—they owned it. After a regular season defined by undefeated district play, both teams were officially crowned District Champions. But the hardware didn’t stop there. In a stunning display of depth and dominance, White County proceeded to sweep every single top spot in the individual singles and doubles tournaments.

From the first serve to the final match point, the Warriors and Warriorettes proved they are the top tennis teams of a district that includes Bledsoe County, Grundy County, Marion County, Sequatchie County, South Pittsburg, and Van Buren County.

The Road to State: Understanding the Post-Season
For the casual fan, tennis post-season play can be a bit of a maze. There are actually two distinct paths to the State Tournament:

The Team Competition: This is a "first to four" race where teams use five singles and two doubles matches. After winning the district, White County now moves to the Region 3 Championship. A win there leads to Sectionals, and a win at Sectionals punches a ticket to the State Tournament.

The Individual Competition: This is a separate bracket for the top players. Coaches select their best singles and doubles pairs to compete. The winners and runners-up from Monday's district sweep move on to the Region tournament at Hixson High School in Chattanooga.

Because of their incredible performance, twelve White County athletes are now on track to qualify for two separate State Tournaments simultaneously.

White County’s dominance was so absolute that they didn't just take first place; they secured the runner-up spots in every category as well, ensuring an all-Sparta final in every singles and doubles bracket.

What’s Next: The Battle for the Region
There is little time to rest and recover from the district tournament. The postseason intensity ramps up immediately with two massive dates on the calendar:

Thursday, April 30th @ 3:00 PM (The Warrior Courts)
The Warriors and Warriorettes will host the powerhouse programs from Signal Mountain High School. This is the Region 3 Team Competition that you'll want to see featuring the top Class A tennis from 20 high schools that stretch from White County south through Chattanooga to the Tennessee/Georgia border. The winner of this dual match will move on to the Sectional Team Competition—the final step before State.

Monday, May 4th (Hixson High School)
The individual qualifiers listed above will travel to Hixson to face the best from District 5. They will be fighting for the title of "Best in Region 3," with State Tournament berths on the line.
