Your lady Spartans were in a record-setting mood on Wednesday at the first RCA cross country jamboree of 2026, hosted by Coopersville.

Mia May led the way, both for Sparta and the RCA,
upsetting the first and second-seeded Bronco runners with a decisive win on their home turf and a season record. Addisyn Wood added another PR to her stellar season with a 19:26 time for a seventh place finish. Anna May broke into the 21s for the first time with her PR performance, and Anna Loy peeled 17 seconds off her best-ever time. Emily Costello surprised everyone (including herself) with her season record finish as the fifth scorer for Sparta. Finley Koutz and Sophia Morrell completed the varsity seven, both with season records.

Adding more records to the trove were Lauren Bradford with an SR, and Alessandra Guerra, continuing her reign as our PR princess. We applaud the consistent work ethic and positive mindset of this cohesive team!

Our Cross Country teams hosted our annual Spartan Invitational last Saturday at Fruit Ridge Hayrides. The Spartans are gearing up for conference meets that start next week 9/23 at Coopersville.

The Women’s Cross Country team traveled to Grand Rapids South Christian on Friday night to compete in the Under The Lights Invitational, an athlete and fan favorite. The athletes took the course at nearly 11pm, embracing the fun and challenging atmosphere.

In the spirit of unity, every athlete stepped up and brought her A-game, contributing to an 8th place finish out of 19 tough teams in the “Nightfall” division. Mia May led the way, medaling and finishing 7th out of 307. Addisyn Wood was 17th overall with a giant PR, grabbing a coveted Medal. Anna May finished 3rd for Sparta in her first varsity 5K with a stellar time of 22:25. Anna Loy’s first 5K was also extraordinary, finishing 4th for Sparta with a gorgeous 22:48 time. Both Annas grabbed a varsity letter with their PR run! Completing the Scoring 5 for Sparta was Finley Koutz with a fantastic letter-earning time, while Emily Costello and Lauren Bradford rounded out the Varsity 7 with equally impressive goal-busting runs.

Sophia Morrell and Makenzie Ringelberg also exceeded their personal goals with finishes very close to our top 7. Congrats to Freshmen Alessandra Guerra for exceeding her expectations in her first varsity 5K, and Sofia Fragale, for her best-ever mile time!

Sparta is in action again on Friday Sept. 4th for the Viking Hokum Karem Invitational in Hopkins.

And they're off!!

Sparta womens’ Cross Country team started their season with a trophy-clinching win at the Rooster’s Crow 2 mile in Hopkins Saturday morning. All five of your lady Spartans’ scorers finished in the top ten of the field, grabbing first, third, fifth, seventh, and eighth place positions.

Congratulations to Mia May, Addisyn Wood, Anna May, newcomer Anna Loy, and Finley Koutz for bringing home hardware from their gutsy finishes. Sophia Morrell and Emily Costello (back from injury) followed closely, rounding out the varsity seven. Lauren Bradford finished at Costello’s elbow, ever the supportive teammate. Freshmen Alessandra Guerra and Sofia Fragale worked hard in their HS cross country debut. It was a fun and successful start to the season for the team.

Your lady Spartans return next Friday night with their first 5K effort at the fan favorite and highly competitive Under the Lights invitational at South Christian.
