Here in our house we tend to have a lot (like, a lot a lot) of barbells kicking around on any given day. And some of them look nearly identical to the untrained eye.

But did you know there’s actually specific barbells for specific types of lifting?

Whether it’s powerlifting, Olympic lifting, or general fitness, we’ve got the tools here to make sure you’re getting the most out of every workout. But the question remains:

How do you know which bar to pick?

Our coaches put together a handy guide for you this month, starting with our color coding system in today’s post.

One thing our coaches all agree on: bands are criminally underutilized in the gym. At varying levels of tension, they can lightly or dramatically add and reduce the amount of load at the top or bottom of certain lifts, and they’re a fantastic addition to most of our already stellar machines around the gym.

So what did they do?

They started a series for it, covering the many different ways you can add bands onto all sorts of different equipment in the place.

Today’s band test is Coach Lou with our Rogue Fitness Donkey (he’s using the reverse hyper portion).

Does it band?

Hell yeah it does.

A number of ways to apply bands in your workouts:

1. Overloading the lockout - increase tension at the top of a rep. Great for targeted hypertrophy at peak contraction or strengthening the lockout on a lift.

2. Reverse band - decrease or deload the bottom segment of a movement. Great for injury rehab, getting over a sticking point in the transition portion of a lift (like down to up in a squat) or allowing your nervous system to get used to a heavier weight without being crushed by it.

3. Dynamic Cues - load up limbs in a direction perpendicular to your movement to better activate lagging stabilizing muscles, correct form, or simply focus on better motor control. Think bands around the knees when squatting.

4. Velocity Training - build fast twitch muscle fibers for explosive movements like running, jumping, and more.

Congratulations to our September Client of the Month, Claire!

Claire’s been working with Coach Dance-Off for a year now, and in that time has made incredible progress in the midst of overcoming some daunting hurdles in her life. A mom of two, the Canadian icon met a breast cancer diagnosis head-on just after beginning her strength journey here with us.

Instead of letting it derail her, Claire doubled down, working side by side with Coach AJ to rehab herself through not one, but two separate subsequent surgeries.

An absolute joy to be around, Coach AJ sums up our feelings about Claire quite concisely in saying, “We’re beyond grateful, and lucky, and appreciative that she chose to be here with us.”

Congratulations Claire! Clients like you make Jacked and Jilled a much happier place to be.
