In early August, I received an email from a local South Milwaukee teacher that included a link to their classroom Amazon wish list.

As I looked through the list, I noticed several items related to menstrual care. I reached out to learn more and found that while the school does keep period products available for students, those supplies can—and do—run out.

I know personally how awful it can feel to be caught off guard by your period and realize you don’t have what you need. For a student trying to make it through the school day, access to these basic supplies shouldn’t be one more thing they have to worry about.

From September 12–26, Beyond Yoga will be collecting menstrual and personal hygiene products for South Milwaukee Middle School.

You can bring donations to the studio anytime you come in for class during those two weeks.

We’ll close out the drive on September 26 with a donation-based Vinyasa class, with 100% of the money collected used to purchase additional hygiene supplies identified by the teacher.

There is a connection to yoga here that feels important to me.

Yoga isn’t only what happens on our mats. Seva is the yogic practice of selfless service—putting compassion into action and caring for the community around us. Sometimes that looks like movement, breath, and presence. Sometimes it looks like making sure a middle school student has a pad or tampon when they need one.

This is one small way our practice can extend beyond the studio walls.
