Congrats to Kate for getting her writ for the SCA's Order of Defense!

This is the organization's highest award, giving out for superior fencing skill and leadership in the community.

Kate has become a steadfast competitor in the East Kingdom, with two Sweet 16 appearances in the EK's Rapier Championship the past few years, as well named to the East's Pennsic Rapier Champions Team and it's captain for two years. She's also a former Queen's Rapier Champion.

She also has used her Excel Fu to help analyze the results of several SCA experiments and projects -- and is always game for showing off some Marozzo or Ghisliero shenanigans.

All that's just the tip of the iceberg.

She'll formally be inducted into the Order in November.

Congrats, Kate!

POCKET SAND! 🏝️⚔️

Yes, pocket sand is a historical technique. Domingo Luis Godinho talks about it in his book “Arte de Esgrima” (On the Art of Fencing) in his section about defeating treachery.

“When (perhaps by your disgrace) you have enemies that at times are waiting for you, at night as well as during the day, make use of a trick: in the right pocket, bring a little bit of sand, the finest that you can find. When they begin drawing, take the sand and scatter it at the eyes.”

In essence… be more treacherous first.

Our Sunday crew exploring limited grappling and in-fighting solutions.

When the duel gets in close, what are your options if a lot of the “dirty” solutions are off the table?

Our dueling sword team are walking through and testing their own ideas of how they can control their opponent’s blade and free theirs for a touch.

Huge thanks to the Reading Public Library for having us out as part of their "Why Not? Wednesdays" event last week!

We worked with a fun crew on the basics of the Renaissance duel with the Italian rapier. Folks got a crash course in stance, movement, offense and defense, and got to partake in their own set of duels at the end.

One fencer attacks, the other defends and it can go into a parry-riposte volley until a good hit lands.

Classical fencing with the Italian dueling sword, foil, and saber happens on Sundays in Cambridge.

A great weekend for the Academie's SCA fencers this past weekend at Falling Leaves.

Donovan won the the Round & Round Robin tournament, winning him a sweet new buckler from Heartsprung Steel. Gavin also made the Finals Pool, fencing the entire tournament with rapier and cloak (ya love to see it).

Meanwhile, Yelena was inducted into the Order of the Perseus, the local SCA chapter's award for martial prowess. She got it for her skill in fencing.

Gavin working on one of Fabris’s 2nd guard with rapier + dagger in a fun option drill.

Gavin approaches in 2nd, slight circling to the coach’s outside:

- Coach does nothing ➡️ Attack
- Coach attacks into invitation ➡️ Dagger parry & counter-thrust to the outside line
- Coach attacks the dagger hand or outside the dagger ➡️ Dagger parry and counter-thrust to the inside line

Sunday Saber Squad working in their direct cuts to head and defense.

One fencer attacks with a cut to the head, the other goes to parry & riposte. After that, the exchange flows into a back and forth “volley” until a valid hit lands.
