Yup! Some Yoga is the triple decker I grew up in!! Top Floor!

Nowhere else in America builds houses quite like this. 🏠 Three floors, three families, one front door, and porches stacked on top of each other like shelves.

The triple decker showed up in New England mill cities in the second half of the 1800s, and Providence is thick with them. They exist because the mills needed workers and the workers needed housing fast and cheap. Balloon framing made them quick to throw up on a narrow lot. Stacked porches gave every floor air and a place to sit and keep an eye on the street. And the arrangement did something that mattered enormously to Irish, Italian, Portuguese and Cape Verdean families arriving here with nothing: you bought the building, you lived on one floor, and your tenants paid the mortgage.

That is why a lot of New England families own anything at all. The triple decker was the ladder. Grandparents downstairs, an aunt on the second, a renter on the third, and everybody thoroughly in everybody else's business.

For most of the twentieth century they had a terrible reputation. Cities called them fire traps and quietly zoned them out of existence. Now they are some of the most sought-after housing stock in Providence, and there are people actively fighting to make them legal to build again.

Did you grow up in a triple decker, and which floor were you on?
