If you've ever tried to shorten your stride and land closer to your body, you probably noticed it felt like more work. Most runners take that as a sign they're doing it wrong.
They're not. Here's what's actually happening 👇
A longer, reaching stride quietly offloads a lot of impact onto your passive structures — bone, cartilage, connective tissue. Those don't contract. They don't cost you any energy. They just absorb.
Land closer to your body and that job shifts to your muscles and tendons. Active tissue has to contract to absorb load, and contracting costs energy.
So yes, it's harder. That's not a flaw in the change — that's the whole point of it. You've taken a load off structures that were quietly taking a beating and handed it to tissue that's designed to manage it.
But here's where people get stuck: if you don't have the capacity to sustain that, one of two things happens. You drift back to your old pattern within a mile. Or you hold it and it just stays exhausting.
This is why plyometrics matter more than most runners realize. They train the stretch-shortening cycle — your body's ability to store and return energy through the tendon rather than muscling through every landing. That efficiency is what makes a shorter, quicker stride sustainable instead of expensive.
Plyos aren't the boring prerequisite before the "real" fix. They're what makes the fix hold.
