Some mornings never become yesterday.
September 11, 2001, began with ordinary goodbyes. A kiss at the door. A drive to work. A flight to catch. Plans for dinner. People expecting to come home.
By evening, our country was mourning 2,977 lives. Every number held a name. Every name belonged to someone loved. Every loss left a silence that time could never completely fill.
We remember the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department and the 72 law-enforcement officers who lost their lives responding that day. We honor the firefighters climbing the stairs, the officers guiding people to safety, the emergency crews caring for strangers, and the courage of those who stayed to help.
We remember New York. The Pentagon. A field in Pennsylvania. And the families whose lives were forever divided into before and after.
Across America, we watched through tears. We called the people we loved. We held our children closer. Flags appeared on porches, candles flickered in gathering places, and strangers stood beside one another in grief.
In the days that followed, people lined up to give blood, brought food to exhausted rescuers, offered shelter, and reached for one another. Through countless acts of kindness, a wounded nation found strength in coming together.
May we carry that compassion forward. May we remember how much it means to show up for one another. And may the names carved into memorials always remind us of the lives, laughter, and love behind them.
From all of us at BPS, we will never forget those who answered the call or those who gave their lives. We hold their families, the survivors, and those still suffering from the aftermath in our hearts.
Forever remembered. Always honored. Never forgotten. 🇺🇸
