If you would’ve told the 20-something-year-old college basketball player version of me that I’d be in better shape at 42, I’m not sure I would’ve believed you.
Because back then, I could WORK.
Run harder. Lift harder. Practice longer. Push through being tired. And somehow I thought the answer was always…more.
What I didn’t understand yet was how much nutrition matters (for example, our coach would take us to fast food for post-game meals to save $$ every single week). How important it is to actually fuel your body instead of just asking more from it. How much recovery matters. And that completely exhausting yourself every single workout isn’t necessarily the recipe for getting stronger.
At 42, I train differently.
I lift heavy. I run. I move a lot. But I also eat the protein, take the recovery days, pay attention to what my body is telling me, and understand that I don’t have to run myself into the ground to be fit.
And somehow, with a lot more years behind me and a lot more knowledge under my belt, I’m stronger, leaner and in better shape than that college athlete ever was.
Getting older doesn’t have to mean watching your best years disappear.
Sometimes your strongest years are still ahead of you. 🩵
