www.tombalding.com Tom grew up in California and began welding the day he graduated from high school. He started his own company and for almost ten years, he made sailboat equipment and was a certified aircraft welder for the US Government. In 1980 he bought a piece of land outside Buffalo, Wyoming; and in 1984, a woman asked him to weld a broken bit. From that moment on, Balding knew he would design and fabricate bits and spurs. Eventually, in 1998, a World Champion Horseman started using Balding’s bits. Word got around the horse circuits that Balding’s bits were the best that money could buy. He later built his shop in Sheridan Wyoming. His business may have expanded to thousands of orders, but he maintains quality control and treats his small staff like family. Our Spirit:

DEALER SPOTLIGHT | RC Bean Saddlery

We thought it would be fun to start highlighting some of the great stores that carry Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, and we’re starting with RC Bean Saddlery in Meridian, Idaho!

Rick has been building saddles for a long time; he made his first one when he was just 15, and RC Bean Saddlery has been around since 1978.

We’ve worked with Rick and Kristie for years, and they are both great people to work with. Kristie knows our products incredibly well, and they keep a really nice selection of our bits and spurs in stock.

So if you’re looking for a Tom Balding bit or pair of spurs and don’t want to wait on a custom order, RC Bean Saddlery is definitely worth checking with. They often have pieces in stock that we may not have available here at the shop.

We sure appreciate Rick and Kristie and are proud to have RC Bean Saddlery as one of our dealers! https://rcbean.com/

Stay tuned; we’ll be highlighting more of the stores that carry our work!

Rowels aren’t just “for looks”… they’re a big part of how your spurs communicate.
They can change:
• Feel & communication — a rowel can make your cue feel more clear and consistent
• Pressure style — smoother, sharper, slower, quicker… it all depends on the design
• How fast they roll — some roll lightning fast, others have a slower, more deliberate feel
• How “sharp” or “soft” they look vs. how they ride — looks can be deceiving 👀
More points doesn’t always mean “sharper.” Depending on the size and how fast it rolls, it may feel smoother than you’d think. A rounder rowel can feel more direct because it rolls slower.
At the end of the day, it’s all personal preference—and different disciplines often call for different feels.
It’s not about being harsh — it’s about being precise. ✅
What’s your go-to rowel style… and what do you like about it?
