SSC SPOTLIGHT ⛵ Captain Shyah Miller
Wondering where Captain Shyah has been this season? She’s had a pretty good excuse.
Shyah spent three months working as a deckhand aboard SV Sea Dragon, a 72-foot expedition sailing yacht originally built for the Global Challenge Race. She sailed 3,273 nautical miles from Key West to Saint Pierre and Miquelon, with stops in Bermuda, Charleston, New York, Newport, Halifax and more.
“I love not carrying my phone everywhere, seeing rainbows in the spray and the fiery burn in my arms after grinding the headsail through a tack. I love figuring out how to be more efficient, improving on who I was the day before and learning constantly.”
From offshore passages to puffins, whales and a dockside welcome of warm croissants in Saint Pierre, it was quite the adventure.
We’re excited to have Captain Shyah back at SSC and bringing a few more sea miles and stories with her. ⛵
Who's ready for a little roll call? ⛵ Drop your favorite photo of you on a boat in the comments.
It doesn't matter if it was your first sailing lesson, a weekend cruise, a race, a charter, or your favorite day on the water. We just want to see where boating has taken you.
Let's turn the comments into one big gallery of our boating community. 📸
Curious about racing, but not quite sure you’re ready to jump in? This is a good place to start.
Join us on August 8 for a casual Racing Ask Me Anything in the Member Lounge. You’ll get to meet longtime members of our Racing Program, instructors and staff, and ask all the questions you’ve been wondering about.
What does a race day actually look like? How much experience do you need? What happens if you have no idea what you’re doing?
No question is too basic and there’s zero pressure. Just come meet the people you’d actually be sailing with and get a feel for what racing at SSC is really like.
It’s free, it’s casual and it might just make racing feel a whole lot less intimidating.

Coffee tastes better. Sunrises hit a little harder. And somewhere along the way, you stop feeling like a passenger and start thinking like a skipper.
That's why we offer these overnight courses.
