Day 1 of our putting series with was all about alignment, using the line on the ball the right way, and learning not to always trust what our eyes think they see.

Angela, Ray, Tim and I got a great lesson on how right-eye or left-eye dominance can change the way we see the line to the hole. Ron explained triangulation — the relationship between your eyes, the ball, and the target — and how your setup may need to be adjusted so the putt actually looks and feels lined up to you.

That means your stance may not always look perfectly “toes to the line,” and that’s okay. The goal is to find the setup where your eyes, aim, and putter face all agree.

Great lesson, great group, and lots of “aha” moments on the green today.

Thanks, Ron!

Today kicked off the first of our short game series with the great — and it was my first time with a club in my hand since February and shoulder surgery.

Ray, Richard, Tim and I learned, laughed, and tried not to melt in the 100 degree heat.

As always, Ron was entertaining, knowledgeable, and full of simple ways to take variables out of the short game.

Biggest takeaways: Weight on the lead side, open club face, feet open left of target, a little outside-in action, smooth pace, and let the follow-through help determine the distance.

Fun morning with the guys!
Great coaching, and now I’m home icing my shoulder!

Next stop...the putting green!

James is 29, turning 30 next week, and moving like a golfer who plans to keep getting better.

Today’s Reformer work: The Mermaid.

The Mermaid looks simple, but it is a big-time golf movement. Before we even get to the reach and rotation, the setup itself asks a lot from the body.

It is basically a 90-90 hip position, with one hip in external rotation and the other in internal rotation — and some golfers can’t even comfortably get into that position yet.

That always tells me something.

Golfers need mobile hips, a responsive rib cage, and the ability to rotate without just stealing motion from the low back.

One video is aimed down: flexion + rotation.
One video is aimed up: extension + rotation.

That means we are training the hips, side body, ribs, lats, obliques, and thoracic spine to work together through different angles — just like the golf swing asks us to do.

Because golf is not just “turn more.” It is rotate, breathe, and control better.

Nice work, James!

Today I had the privilege of celebrating the life of Gary Lange Martin — a man who truly lived fully, loved deeply, and made every room better just by being in it.

Gary’s life was filled with music, golf, travel, family, friends, great food, good wine, and the kind of joy that is impossible to fake.

He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force band...playing saxophone, clarinet, and flute. He shared his love of jazz and big-band music with young musicians, traveled the world with his beloved wife Suzi, and found so much pride and happiness in his family — especially his grandson Nickolas.

At THE CLUB, we knew Gary as one of those people who made the day brighter. He showed up with a smile, a kind word, and a presence that reminded you what it looks like to savor life.

The quote shared at his celebration said it perfectly:
“To know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here; this is to have succeeded.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Gary succeeded.
Like a glass of really fine Bordeaux, Gary savored life until the very last drop.
We will miss him tremendously, and we are better for having known him. 💜
