Birds are in for Preseason Dog Training and field work!

Dog training opened up Sept 1st! I wasn't in too big of a hurry to announce the opener... It IS HOT! Next week looks better though and mornings will continue to cool down. Shoot me a message or set up a date if you are interested.

If you have a new dog and would like to get started we can do that! I will have Quail in for intro to birds. Typically a session with me is about 45 minutes to an hour. We can assess the dog and we'll do what they are ready for. Sometimes that's just getting them on a couple of birds. If we have a confident dog we can intro gunfire. It really depends on the dog. The keys to success are having fun and letting the dog build confidence. I have a few options. If you want to do a gun dog training session with me the cost is $150. This includes 2-3 birds and I will give you a hand.

Solo cost without assistance is $60 for members and $70 for non members. This includes 5 quail per session and a field to work in. I will not be setting birds if you would like to do solo work!

Northern Ontario Bear hunt!

I recently got back from a trip to Northern Ontario for my 1st black bear hunt. It won't be my last! A friend and myself took the long journey north to get out in the wild for a week and bear hunt in a remote area. It was very successful and I enjoyed getting out on a hunt. I was able to hunt with my 30/30, which is a great bush gun and it worked very well. I'm very excited to get a rug made and I'm processing all of the meat to eat this winter, as well as rendering all of the fat plus some of my buddies. He had extra. My kind of hunt is in the middle of no where with very few people around and this checked all of the boxes. I got some fishing in as well and the timing worked very well as it didn't interfere with my pheasant hunting season. You are required to have an outfitter and we had an excellent one with a large land tract. I'd honestly plug them, but I'm pretty positive they will have a waiting list next season and they didn't tell me to so I'll just say they were the best. Really my kind of people.

Half day hunt raffle! Only 10 tickets will be sold and I have 7 left!

A half day hunt birds of your choice, 4 pheasant, 5 chukar, or 10 quail!

See you soon!

Bob says "Good enough." Dad is heading out later next week up North across the border for a hunting trip. I'll be up in Ontario, shooting an old school Marlin 30-30 lever action. 1st time shooting it in probably 20+ years. We sighted it in at 50. Can you guess what I'm hunting?

Year 16 is coming up!

A little bit of the hot oppressive weather has broke recently and we have gotten some rain. August is here, and I'm starting to think about getting out in the fields, I hope you are too! We are having a great off season as a family and have had a memorable summer.

Recently we took a trip out west making it all the way out to Bozeman, Montana before round tripping it back. We made a lot of stops along the way. It was the first time getting the 2 little guys out away from home and on the road for an extended period of time. They did great! We did a lot more sightseeing than hunting or fishing on this trip. Next time I think we will get in at least one of the 2. But we have plenty of both coming up sooner than later and I know I'm excited.

I hope you are having a great summer as well and are looking forward to this fall!

One of our stops was at the Badlands National Park! We got around the rim and spotted a lot of wildlife and some great views!

Woodland Restoration and Hunting Course Success!

The Hickory Woods and Cheese Plant woods have had a great deal of offseason success this year. I got a really good burn in both areas in early spring and got rid of a lot of unwanted brush and stickers. Both of these areas were great to hunt in this past season and I'm continuing to improve them. I'm looking forward to yanking out a lot more of the undesirable trees and plants this upcoming December and January.
An offseason upside to the restoration efforts is that I am seeing a lot of native plants come up. The one below was a particular surprise! I found 3 colonies of Michigan Lily due to my efforts and burn this year. There were about 100 or so and 1/4 or so were blooming this year. These will be high-priority areas to clear out a bit more this upcoming year.
Better hunting and restoration sound like a win-win to me!

Bob's Food plot!

Bob planted a bumper crop! His food plot is looking good. He's looking forward to putting a few more in next season since we've gotten everything dialed in!

Tri Star Viper G2 Pro 410 Semi Auto Winner is Will Anderson!

Congrats Will! And thank you to everyone who purchased tickets! I'll have another raffle in the near future!

50 Pheasant Flush and Quail Cup Winners!

I'm not too sure if I announced the winners of our last season's competitions in a newsletter or not so I'll make sure to get it out!

Team Drew Crew ran away with both competitions! I will be holding both again this upcoming season. It was a great time although the weather didn't totally cooperate last season!

Members!

I'll be reaching out in the near future to all of my members! If you are interested in joining let me know! I'm looking forward to having everyone back and to meet a few new outdoorsman this upcoming season!

See you soon!

Check out Will Anderson's youtube channel and give him a like and a follow. Will is from nearby Galena. I've known him and his family for a long time. He participated in our Jo Daviess PF Youth hunts growing up and I also had the opportunity to coach him. Really great young man with a bright future, and his vids and commentary do not disappoint!

I am down to 20 hunts left!

Thank you to everyone that has come out and moved the last of the birds out of the door. I really appreciate it. I am down to 20 $150 8 bird hunts left to finish out the season. The weather looks good next week and I would certainly like to finish out the season by April 12th! If you would like to get out please let me know.

I have some great specials to move some birds out the door throughout the rest of the season.

8 pheasants for $150 vs my regular priced 4 for $140

The 50 Pheasant Flush is 50 pheasants for $1400

Tower Shoot 5 pheasants per gun for $100 a gun

100 bird blowout $2000 for 100 birds

I have a great field to do the 50 birds or 100 birds for that matter.

Tower Shoot on April 12th!

Last weekends tower shoot went great! We tossed out 70 birds and had a lot of fun. Send me a message if you want in on the next shoot which will be held April 12th. Get a bunch of buddies together. You can't beat the price or the shooting you will get in. I'll even drive you down in the Blue Bomber 15 passenger van.

Food Plot Planning!

I decided to pick up some "new" equipment to make improvements to our food plots moving ahead. It looks like I'll have a little bit of a hobby farmer array of implements. I got really lucky and scored this John Deere 7000 4 row planter, which is pretty much bomb proof. This piece also has liquid fertilizer applicators on it which will be really handy! I'll be able to plant corn or beans from now on and this will also help me clean my food plots up as I rotate crops from year to year. I'm aiming on continuing to improve the fields every year from cover, to food plots, to shelter belts and I think this will help out quite a bit.

Birds are available!

Pheasants are available this year, even though we are getting to the end of the season, and I have some great deals. I am planning on staying open until April 12th, possibly later but I have found that a lot of guys want to get out on the water and move onto warmer weather hobbies. If you want to head out let me know.

50 Pheasant Flush

The 50 Pheasant Flush has been going very well. Jeff and the Bear Hunters came down from Northern WI last weekend and had "a great time". The 6 guns ran 4 dogs 2 goldens and 2 english setters. The birds held well, and I utilized the Island Field. I'm going to stick with that field for the remainder of the season for larger groups of birds. This time of year, in open fields, the birds want to run. In that field they stick to the cover and it works very well.
