Kobe Bryant’s Achilles injury in 2013 became one of the most unforgettable moments of his legendary NBA career. At 34 years old, Bryant was still carrying an enormous workload for the Los Angeles Lakers as they fought to reach the playoffs, playing through pain and refusing to slow down.

On April 12, 2013, against the Golden State Warriors, Kobe suffered a torn left Achilles tendon late in the fourth quarter. Even after realizing something was seriously wrong, he stayed in the game long enough to walk to the free-throw line.

Kobe calmly made both free throws.

Then he walked off the court.

The injury ended his season and required surgery, beginning one of the most difficult comeback attempts of his career. An Achilles tear can be devastating for any basketball player, especially one already deep into his 30s, but Bryant immediately focused on returning to the game.

NBA 2K27 is officially here for early-access players, bringing another major update to the biggest basketball video game franchise in the world. The worldwide release arrives September 4, with Victor Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark, and Derrick Rose featured across the game’s different editions.

One of the biggest changes comes to gameplay. NBA 2K27 introduces more than 7,000 new ProPLAY animations, redesigned physical defense, an overhauled shot-contest system, expanded dribbling customization, new finishing mechanics, and a revamped Takeover system designed to give players more control on both sides of the court.

MyCAREER is also getting a major expansion, with five playable eras of NBA history, a much larger story, and co-op functionality that allows another player to control your Running Mate. The City has become co-ed for the first time, allowing male and female MyPLAYERs to compete together across multiplayer modes.

MyNBA has received a franchise overhaul with more than 20 community-requested changes, updated CBA mechanics, and the new MyNBA Legacy experience. MyTEAM, The W, and MyWNBA have also received significant progression and gameplay updates.

Every year, NBA 2K gives basketball fans the opportunity to build their own superstar, create dream teams, rebuild franchises, and compete against players around the world.

Enes Kanter Freedom has thrown himself directly into one of the biggest controversies surrounding the WNBA after announcing that he intends to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft as part of his protest over transgender participation in women’s sports. The former NBA center says his goal is to challenge what he believes are inconsistencies surrounding eligibility rules, though he would not actually be eligible for the WNBA Draft.

The controversy comes as the WNBA finds itself increasingly pulled into the national debate over transgender athletes. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has publicly argued that athletes she describes as biological males should not compete in women’s sports, while other WNBA players and figures have pushed back and defended transgender inclusion. The debate is especially unusual because there are currently no transgender women playing in the WNBA.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has acknowledged that the league is discussing transgender participation and that the subject will continue receiving significant attention. The players association has also spoken out against hate and the politicization of transgender people as the conversation surrounding the league has become increasingly intense.

The situation has expanded beyond players and league officials. Fans wearing shirts expressing opposition to transgender participation were initially asked by security to cover them at a WNBA game in Atlanta, with the league later saying those fans should have been allowed to wear the shirts. Kanter Freedom’s appearances around WNBA games have generated additional confrontations and headlines.

At the same time, players including Cameron Brink have strongly criticized Kanter Freedom’s approach, arguing that he is turning a complicated issue into a spectacle rather than having a serious conversation. The result is a WNBA season where debates about gender, free speech, politics, player safety, and league leadership have increasingly competed with basketball itself for attention.
