In Japanese martial arts, students quickly learn that earning a first‑degree black belt (Shodan 初段) is not the final goal, despite popular belief. It marks the beginning of true study. Many compare Shodan to passing a driving test: you’ve learned the fundamentals, and now you’re ready to actually develop skill.

TESTING FOR JAPANESE DAN RANKS
In our San‑do‑ryu dojo, students progress through seven belt colors—white, yellow, blue, orange, green, purple, and brown—before reaching the probationary black belt rank, Shodan Ho. Advancing to full Shodan typically requires an additional 4–6 months of training, depending on individual progress and dojo standards. After that there are 9 more dans to achieve, time periods vary at every dojo, but generally a 3rd dan takes 2-3 years after the 1st dan is earned, this period is the beginning of the advanced training.
Testing fees in Japanese karate schools vary, generally ranging from $10 to $100 or more per exam. These fees cover the evaluation, belt, and diploma. (See your Sensei for testing fees)
