Picking a high school for your ballplayer? The trophy case is lying to you.

Every summer, eighth grade families ask me the same thing. Private or public. The powerhouse two towns over, or the school down the street. Stay, or transfer.

Here is what 35 years in the game taught me. The name on the jersey has never once decided whether a kid can play. Playing time does.

Do the math. A kid in the everyday lineup gets 70 to 90 at bats a varsity season, plus a hundred-plus innings in the field. A kid on the bench at a "better" school gets a fraction of that and falls hundreds of reps behind over a career. Nobody gets recruited sitting down.

So go where your player gets a real education and a real chance to be on the field. If they can play at the highest level and still start, wonderful. If not, every rep on JV beats watching from the varsity bench.

Baseball and softball will put you exactly where you belong. Your only job is to make sure where you belong is on the field.

Nobody rises in the moment. You sink to whatever you built in the quiet.

That clutch at-bat, that throw from the hole, that extra step out of the box. None of it shows up because the lights came on. It shows up because of the work nobody saw. The reps before practice. The swings after everyone went home. The film you studied when you could have been scrolling.

Preparation is not one thing either. It is your hitting and your power, your speed in the 60, your arm, your glove. It is also the part most players forget until it is too late. Your grades, your required classes, your eligibility. Real preparation covers all of it, on the field and off.

MyGrind is built to track every piece so when the occasion comes, you do not have to rise. You are already there.

Put in the work in the quiet. Earn the moment in the light.

Scouts and coaches grade 5 tools. Not one of them shows up by accident 🔥

Hit. Hit for power. Run. Field. Throw

The bat speed? Built in the reps nobody saw.
The speed down the line. Built on tired legs in the offseason .
The arm? Built one long toss session at a time.
Power? Built in the gym in the offseason

Five tools, one truth, the player who tracks the work is the player who builds the tools. Average athletes guess.
Five tool athletes measure, log, and grind everyday. ⚾️🥎

Whatever your player is chasing today, one more rep on the weak tool, thats the one that moves the needle.
Win the rep. Stick the day. Build the playerđź’Ş

Two things you control: your effort and your attitude. Own them both. You don’t control the weather, the umpire, the lineup card, or the kid throwing 88 from the mound you don’t control the bad hop or the call that didn’t go your way. But every single day, you decide how hard you work and how you carry yourself when things get tough. That’s the separator. The players of who own those two things are the ones who keep climbing, on the field and in the classroom. Because the mindset that shows up for early work and extra reps is the same one that shows up for the GPA, the required courses, and staying eligible when colleges come calling. Effort and attitude. Track the work across all five tools hitting for power, speed, throwing and fielding and watch what discipline does over a season. The scoreboard is out of your hands. The grind never is.
