This dismissive and belittling attitude of boxing trainers is exactly why Chris Eubank Jr. never fulfilled his potential as a boxer. He’s had a very lucrative career and a good one as a pro, but as I’ve said for years, he’s avoided every major world champion in and around his weight in their prime since he lost to George Groves. This isn’t hate, it’s a fact.

He’s gone through boxing trainers like I’ve gone through socks. One after the other. Brilliant trainers as well, but he just wouldn’t let his ego take a step back. A boxing trainer is just as important as the fighter.

The sacrifices and dedication they put in are never truly appreciated. They aren’t just “pad men,” they are a best friend, life coach, counselor, and boxing trainer rolled into one. There won’t be one fighter who disagrees with this. Not on, besides Chris Eubank Jr. That tells you all you need to know.

Umar Nurmagomedov knew exactly what went wrong — and he had been warned about it before.

Before his UFC Shanghai main event against Song Yadong, Umar had admitted that he had a recurring habit of leaning down and to his left during exchanges. Khabib Nurmagomedov, along with his coaches, had repeatedly told him to fix the mistake.

Against Song, that habit came back at the worst possible moment.

Early in the second round, Umar changed levels for a takedown, and Song timed him perfectly with a short right uppercut that landed flush and ended the fight at 1:48. It handed Umar only the second loss of his professional career and completely changed the trajectory of his bantamweight title run.

Umar later acknowledged the mistake himself:

“I have this big mistake. I always go down [leans towards his left]. Even in the gym, coach, Khabib, they all the time tell me don’t do this, you have to fix this.”

“Today I paid for it. We’re not perfect, but we will try to become.”

A brutal lesson — but one Umar will have the chance to learn from.
