Only One Sport After 40?
(You might invite injury)
If you can describe your exercise routine with just one word, like: running, cycling, tennis, yoga, or Pilates, it's probably time to add something else.
As we get older, we're not fragile, but we do recover more slowly. Muscle protein synthesis slows, connective tissues take longer to heal, and all those little support muscles become much more important.
That's why I say cross training isn't just for elite athletes. It's for anyone who wants to stay active for decades.
Keep doing the thing you love most. Just support it with a little strength training and a little stretching.
It doesn't have to be much. Even 10 to 15 minutes a day can add up to a huge difference over time.
Your goal (probably) isn't to become a hybrid athlete.
Your goal is to keep doing the sport you love without it breaking you. 💪

Stuck with your handstand? Try this…
I spent years doing wall kicks up, again and again without much progress.
Then I noticed something: CrossFit athletes, many of whom have limited shoulder mobility and rarely practice handstands, were not only holding handstands but walking on their hands.
That’s when I realized a huge part of learning your first handstand isn’t balance. It’s overhead pressing strength.
Once I could strict press about 30% of my body weight overhead, I started sticking my handstands. My alignment still isn’t great, but there’s no question that I should have started with strength before alignment - not the other way around.
Some exercises demonstrate a strength or skill, others develop it. Sometimes they are the same, but not always.
If you too are stuck with hand balancing like I was, try overhead dumbbell pressed twice weekly. It might make a huge difference.
Do you have knee pain? People often say, “Movement is medicine.” But why?
One reason is mechanotransduction: the process where your body turns the forces created by movement into biological signals that help tissues adapt and repair.
This helps stimulate:
• Collagen synthesis
• Better collagen fiber alignment
• Healthy tissue remodeling
If two people have the same knee injury, the one who follows a carefully progressed loading program will usually recover better than the one who avoids movement altogether.
The key is appropriate loading. Too much can delay healing, but for most people, underloading is the bigger problem.
Are you dealing with a knee injury? What’s been working for you?

Everyone says community is what makes a local studio or fitness center successful.
I think that’s mostly wrong.
At your favorite studio, how many people do you actually know? Two? Four? Maybe a handful. How many do you spend time with outside of class? Probably none.
That’s not community. It’s something different. Super valuable, but different.
It’s a vibe. You feel welcome. You know what to expect. The instructors are great. You enjoy the people around you. You leave feeling better than when you walked in. Most importantly, you’re getting results.
That’s why you come back.
Of course, there are exceptions. Just like there are bands, sports clubs, and festivals where lifelong friendships are formed, a small number of studios really do create genuine communities.
But they’re the exception.
The distinction matters because almost nobody can intentionally build a community. Communities emerge. They’re hard to manufacture.
A great vibe, on the other hand, is something almost anyone can learn to create.
Ironically, people who set out to “build community” often fail because they’re chasing the wrong goal.
And every once in a while, someone succeeds... only to discover they’ve built something that feels a lot more like a cult than a community.

You can likely lower your resting heart rate by around 10% in the next month with structured walking.
In my Five for Life program, we use a simple method called ABC Walking. It’s a periodized walking program that’s low impact, easy to follow, and designed to improve cardiovascular fitness without beating up your joints.
Instead of trying to walk faster, especially if you have knee or lower back pain, we increase the challenge by going uphill or climbing stairs.
Just 30 minutes a day. 150 minutes a week.
It’s realistic, sustainable, and one of the simplest ways to improve your heart health.
