A timeless photo of four Hawaiian surfing legends from the early 1990s—likely around 1991. Featuring Johnny Boy Gomes, Derek Ho (RIP), Kaipo Jaquias, and Sunny Garcia. Derek's legacy lives on, and his presence in the Pipeline barrels is deeply missed. Sunny, you're in our thoughts every day. Stay strong.

Seven-time world champion surfer Layne Beachley has spoken openly about the painful experiences that shaped her life and career.

According to reliable interviews and published profiles, Layne lost her adoptive mother, Valerie Beachley, to a brain haemorrhage when she was just six years old. Two years later, her father told her she had been adopted, leaving her struggling with feelings of abandonment and rejection.

Years later, after reconnecting with her biological mother in 1999, Layne learned she had been conceived through a date r**e. She later explained that these experiences deeply affected her self-worth and became a driving force behind her relentless pursuit of success in surfing.

In interviews with The Guardian and other outlets, Layne admitted she spent years believing she had to become “the best in the world” to feel worthy of love. Her extraordinary determination helped her win seven world titles, but she also described the emotional cost of living with fear, pressure, and unresolved trauma.

Today, Layne is widely respected not only as one of surfing’s greatest champions, but also for her honesty about grief, identity, mental health, and resilience.

I'm a bit confused! 😅 I always thought Sean was the oldest and Kelly was the middle brother, but in this childhood photo Kelly looks like the eldest. Am I missing something?

Emery Kauanui was one of those surfers who had real promise and pure ocean energy in the water. Raised between Kauai and Southern California, he became part of the La Jolla surf scene and was known for his talent, style, and easygoing spirit around Windansea.

His life was tragically cut short in 2007 after a violent incident outside his home, leaving the surf community in shock and deep sadness. He was only 24.

Even years later, his story is still remembered, not just for how it ended, but for the potential and love for surfing he carried every time he paddled out. Gone too soon, but not forgotten.
Rest in peace, Emery. 🌊

At just 13 years old, Bethany Hamilton was surfing at Tunnels Beach - a peaceful, beautiful spot she had surfed many times before.
The ocean was calm. Nothing felt dangerous.
Then, in a split second, a massive tiger shark attacked.
It took her left arm.
The water turned red, and the calm morning became a fight for her life. She lost a huge amount of blood, and getting her to shore in time was nothing short of a miracle.
Doctors weren’t sure she would survive.
But she did.
And what shocked the world even more, just one month later, Bethany went back to the same ocean.
Same waves. Same place.
This time, with one arm.
She had to relearn everything, how to paddle, how to balance, how to stand. It was painful, frustrating, and terrifying.
But she never gave up.
Wave by wave, she came back.
Not just as a surfer…
But as a symbol of courage, showing the world that even after the worst moment of your life you can still rise, stronger than before.
