The unique age between birth to around 3-4 years old is a special time when so much is developing and forming inside your child: emotions, attachments, self-esteem, speech, focus and attention, sensory processing and even their intellect
Hereβs what you should avoid doing during this period of your childβs development:
β 1. Donβt discipline for showing their emotions.
If your child is crying, whining, screaming β they are not manipulating, not being βbadβ, they are just communicating their emotional state to you. At this age kids donβt have the skills to regulate their own emotions, they will learn to do it by watching us!
β 2. Donβt speed up their development
Early academic education, reading, advanced math, algebra at three β all of this has a negative impact on the developing mind. Whatβs important for this age group is movement, autonomy, connection and play.
β 3. Donβt compare your child to other kids
βLook at Max, heβs already . . .β
These comments destroy self-esteem. Each child develops at their own pace and you should only compare them to themselves and their progress
β 4. Stay away from too much control
Overcontrolling and many βno!β creates anxiety and insecurity in your child. Itβs much more beneficial to set up wider boundaries and let your child have autonomy within those boundaries
β 5. Encourage curiosity and boundary pushing
If your child is very obedient and conforming at 3 or 5 years old, that could mean that they are too scared to lose connection with you. Itβs important that your child throws tantrums, tries to see how far they can push boundaries, and lets you know what they want and donβt want. All this behavior tells you that your child is developing appropriately

Hereβs what Iβve learned over the years being a parenting coach ‡οΈ
π‘ Childrenβs brain is not fully developed and the part of the brain that is responsible for impulse control is very under constrution until early to late 20s I
Aaaaand it goes fully offline when they are dysregulated, meaning that they are not capable of controling themselves in those moments
So yelling or shaming them wouldnβt help in the moment, it would just add MORE dyregulation
After learning this and adjusting my approach to handling my kids fighting, here is what happened:
β¨ Both kids felt seen and heard
β¨ Behavior is addressed when their brain can actually learn
β¨ They start to build emotional regulation skills to use when they are older
β¨ Our connection stays intact

On trips away from home, the less you expect, the calmer youβll be. Expecting your kid to eat healthy or stay off technology as they do at home? Prepare for power struggles and tantrums. While Iβm not suggesting you should abandon all boundaries, allowing some flexibility while traveling can help everyone

Let your teen feel in control by involving them in planning activities on your trip. Let them choose and plan some of the activities, especially the ones they are interested in. This gives them a glimps to do their own planning in the future

Do you have a system when you pack your suitcase? Do you roll your clothes or use cubes? Let your teen pack their own bag. Show them some packing techniques, give a checklist, and let them do it. This not only leaves you with more time to pack yourself but also shows your teen that you believe in them
βοΈππ‘ππ£ ππ§ππ πππ’π
If your trip is packed with a lot of activities, have some free time too. Let your teen (and yourself) relax for half a day at the hotel or a cafΓ©. Once recharged, everyone be excited to explore more

Conflicts are inevitable when spending all your time together. Irritation often stems from being tired, hungry, or bored. Try to recognize which one is happening and let them them release their frustration to defuse the situation faster. Remember, you might be irritable for the same reasons they are, so meeting everyoneβs needs as much as possible is key
