This Week’s Current 🌊

I feel empowered today, and I know that feeling will change. So I can’t rely on emotion alone. What I can rely on is consistency, faith, effort, discipline, and play. That’s the list that keeps me centered because all feelings will pass.

New Current drops every Monday inside The Deep End, our online home for high performance mindfulness.

Take a moment to think about what are some things you can trust for sure? Drop one below!

Things aren’t happening TO you, they’re happening FOR you. That’s the reframe gratitude gives you.

Think about how easy it is to look at a hard set and think “I HAVE to do this.” Now shift that one word: “I GET to do this.” How lucky am I that I even get the chance to try…

That’s how 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin trains her mind. Not “I have to kick my own butt every day.” bBut”I get to.” Not “I have to grind through five or six hours of training.” But “I get to chase being the best I can be, every single day.”

She says that shift is what carried her through the roughest stretches of her career, because professional sport is finite, and she wasn’t going to waste a single day of it feeling burdened by something most people never get the chance to do at all.

Earlier this week we asked you to reflect on your past season and express gratitude towards it. Now, where in your training can you shift “I have to” into “I get to” and invite more gratitude into your daily training. Drop it below!

With the season coming to a close it’s worth noticing what actually got you through it. All the morning practices, the lactic sets, your teammates by your side, the best times and the races that didn’t go your way.

Gratitude does more than feel nice at the end of a season, it calms your nervous system down while it sharpens what you pay attention to. Gratitude is contagious, and the swimmers who notice the good stuff tend to keep showing up for themselves!

This week’s Current is about that: let your gratitude overflow. What from this season are you still forgetting to thank?

Right now some of you are deep into Jr Nats with 5 sessions still ahead, and some of you just walked out of Nationals or Futures.

At a big championship meet when your nerves are heightened, your brain will try to swim the whole meet before your next race even starts — every prelim, every relay, every cut you still need, all at once.

Your nervous system can’t tell the difference between a real threat and a thought and it reacts to both the same way. Your heart rate goes up, breath shallows, mind races three events ahead.

Regulating it isn’t about calming down, but about narrowing down. One breath, one wall, one race at a time. What are you actually racing right now?
