“Authenticity” in belly dance.
Lord. That's a rabbit hole.
I've spent decades studying this dance.
- Old VHS tapes
- Egyptian workshops
- American workshops
- Trips to Egypt and Lebanon
Teachers saying, “Always this.”
Other teachers saying, “Never that.”
And somewhere in the middle of all of that…
THERE WAS ME.
The American ballet/jazz-trained blonde.
Would anyone have ever called my dancing “authentic”?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
But here's where my thinking has changed...
I think authenticity becomes a very different question when we're talking about improvisation. Because when you're improvising...
- YOU HAVE CHOICES
- You can stick to a script.
- You can guard your movements because you're afraid of crossing some invisible line.
Or…
- You can develop the skills to listen deeply enough that you trust your trained body to respond.
That's the one I'm voting for.
And that's a big part of what Project Band has taught me.
I wrote more about it here:

🤔 Any live music is better than no live music.
😃 But a YEAR of live music is best!
When you can step into an improvised performance to live music saying to yourself (and MEANING it!!) ‘I’m going to surrender to the music. I’m going to be bold. It’s ok if I mess up. I get a lot more opportunities just like this.’…. you become open to every possibility. You learn to trust yourself.
And what you discover from a place like that is sure to stick!
📚In Project Band, we give ourselves permission to dance to live music as a lesson.
🚌 We use the time on stage as a means. Not the end.
‼️It makes a difference.
😌 It trains you to stay calm.
♟️Calm nervous systems make better choices faster. And that’s important for an improviser!
Our next Project Band year starts in November and ends with GoLive! 2027.
Registration opens on Wednesday, September 9.

One of the biggest misconceptions about improvisation is that it's something you're either born with... or you're not. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT.
Improvisation is a skill.
Like listening... Like timing... Like choosing your words in a conversation... You get better at it by practicing. Not by hoping inspiration suddenly appears.
That's why Project Band exists.
We practice the things people usually think can't be practiced. Because they can.

People often ask me, "So... what exactly *is* Project Band?"
The easiest answer would be to call it a year-long improvisation program.
– But that doesn't really explain it.
Project Band isn't about memorizing more choreography or collecting more combinations.
It's about changing the way you hear music.
It's about learning to listen before you move.
To make choices instead of reactions.
To become comfortable with uncertainty.
To discover that improvisation isn't something you're born knowing how to do—it's something you practice.
Some dancers come because they want to improve.
Many stay because it completely changes how they think about dancing.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing more about what actually happens inside Project Band and why we've spent years building it the way we have.
