From the beginning days of river rafting, in the middle part of last century, Western River Expeditions has been a pioneer for the rafting industry. For example, the first self-bailing boat floors used on the exploratory trips in Mexico's now lost rivers (El Sumidero, and Rio Grijalva) in 1962, or the creation of the J-Rig - designed specifically for the safest and best ride over the large waves o
f the Grand Canyon. Many other industry devices from modern toilet boxes and ingenious foot-action hand-wash systems used today were spear-headed by Western and approved as the standard by the Park Service as needed. But for all the contraptions and gizmos that make life better on the river, we've never forgotten what it's really all about - helping others experience life by canyon and river. Just that simple goal of sharing the rivers and canyons we love with as many people as possible continues to be our ultimate satisfaction and goal.

Sure, there’s exciting whitewater, but a river trip is about so much more than rapids. It’s incredible scenery, hidden side canyons, hikes, waterfalls, campfires, great food, and plenty of time to slow down and enjoy being somewhere truly wild.
You don’t have to be an adrenaline ju**ie to fall in love with rafting.
