Our first adaptive riding lesson was a few days ago ! This tiny toy had a super fun lesson with Adaptive riding instructor Michayla Kent and our horse Blue! Blue is very good at her job !

It’s more than “just a riding lesson”

Adaptive riding can help riders work on confidence, balance, coordination, motor skills, communication, independence, following directions, problem-solving, and connection with the horse.

Unmounted Mini Horse Lesson! Your weekly lessons don’t just have to be mounted lessons. There’s so much to learn about horses! The learning is never ending!

1. Leading & Safety

* Practice leading the mini at a walk
* Practice stopping, starting, and changing directions
* Learn where your body should be when leading
* Learn where you shouldn’t stand, especially directly in front of or behind the horse
* Practice maintaining personal space and awareness

2. Moving With the Horse

* Walk beside the mini
* Practice jogging/trotting next to the horse
* Learn how to match the horse’s pace
* Practice staying beside the shoulder rather than getting ahead or falling behind
* Talk about watching the horse’s body language while moving

3. Confidence Building

* Leading through different spaces
* Navigating around cones and poles
* Asking the mini to move through something new
* Encouraging students to try independently
* Celebrate effort, not just getting the exercise “right”

4. Brainstorming
Give the students a challenge:

“What can we build with these obstacles?”

Let them work together to decide how to create a course using:

* Cones
* Poles
* Barrels
* Hula hoops
* Pool noodles
* Small jumps/poles
* Tarps
* Flags or other safe obstacles

Then have them explain why they designed the course that way.

5. Teamwork Challenge
Have students work in pairs or small groups to:

* Design an obstacle course
* Decide who leads first
* Help each other through the course
* Give positive feedback
* Make changes if something doesn’t work

Lesson Goal

The focus isn’t just on working with the mini. It’s teaching kids to think, communicate, problem-solve, work as a team, and build confidence while learning safe horsemanship.

🐴🍀 Would Your Family Be Interested in 4-H at Lazy J Ranch? 🍀🐴

We are exploring the possibility of starting a 4-H Club right here at Lazy J Ranch in Salisbury, and we’d love to hear from local families!

Our vision is to create a welcoming, hands-on 4-H experience where youth ages 5-18 can learn, grow, build confidence, develop leadership skills, and be part of a great community.

While horses would certainly be part of life at the ranch, we would love for the club to offer opportunities in a variety of areas, including:

🐴 Horses & Horsemanship
🌱 Gardening & Growing
🐝 Beekeeping & Pollinators
🐓 Chickens & Animal Care
🌻 Agriculture & Farm Life
🎨 Hands-On Projects & Skills
🤝 Community Service
⭐ Leadership & Personal Development

This is just an interest poll — you are not committing to join.

If your family might be interested in participating in a 4-H program at Lazy J Ranch, please vote below!

Would your family be interested?

If you’re interested, reply with the emoji that beat represents your interest and drop the ages of your children and what kinds of 4-H activities they would be most excited about in the comments. This will help us understand what our community is looking for as we begin developing the program.

👍YES — Definitely interested!
😊MAYBE — I’d like to learn more.
❤️YES— And I may be interested in volunteering/helping too.
👎NOT RIGHT NOW — But keep us posted.

MEET “Sonja"
14.0 H | 10-Year-Old Norwegian Fjord Mare
Location: Lazy J Ranch, Salisbury, MA

Looking for a horse that can do a little bit of everything?
Sonja is a beautiful Norwegian Fjord mare with natural athletic ability, an intelligent mind, and a willingness to learn that makes her a joy to work with. She thrives when given a job, enjoys building relationships with her people, and has the versatility to explore multiple disciplines. Sonja is athletic, willing, and incredibly versatile with a “try anything” attitude that makes every ride rewarding. With experience and training across multiple disciplines, she enjoys having a purpose and is happiest when learning something new.

What makes Sonja stand out is her combination of brains and athleticism. She is quick to learn, enjoys being challenged, and has shown talent both on the ground and under saddle. Whether your interests include dressage, jumping, trail riding, groundwork, liberty work, or simply developing a deeper partnership with a horse, Sonja offers tremendous potential.

Enjoys jumping
Athletic with natural balance and movement
Shows great promise as a dressage prospect

Wants a versatile horse capable of multiple disciplines
Is confident, patient, and consistent
Enjoys both riding and horsemanship on the ground

Why We Love Sonja

Sonja is not a one-dimensional horse. She has the athleticism to explore dressage and jumping, the temperament to enjoy trails and horsemanship activities, and the intelligence to keep learning new skills. She is curious, willing, and happiest when she has a person of her own.
At Lazy J Ranch, we believe the most rewarding horses are those you grow with, and Sonja is exactly that kind of horse. She offers a unique opportunity for a rider who wants more than just saddle time, they want a partnership.

There is something truly special about a hug from a horse.

In that quiet moment, breathing slows, worries soften, and the world seems to stand still. Horses have an incredible way of helping us feel grounded, safe, and understood, without saying a single word.

If I ever see someone sharing a hug with one of our horses, I will never rush them or interrupt that moment. Some of the most meaningful healing happens in the silence, and those few extra seconds can mean more than we will ever know.
Thank you Sonja ❤️
