You often hear me reference accommodating resistance as a great way to make otherwise mundane movements more challenging.

Here I’ve added medium-weight chains to an incline bench press. While the chains total about 40 pounds, they don’t all come into play at once. As I press the bar, more of the chain lifts off the floor, gradually increasing the load.

This means I’m strongest where the weight is heaviest and mechanically weakest where the weight is lightest. The result is better force production, improved lockout strength, increased bar speed, and a novel training stimulus without changing the movement itself.

It’s a simple adjustment that can make a familiar exercise feel completely different.

A little peek at the next three days…

It’s not lost on me how fortunate I am to have built a schedule like this. In an industry where so many talented people struggle to make a sustainable living, I never take it for granted.

A few years ago, I was ready to leave this industry. I wanted the security of a “real job” because as a single mom (at the time) I wasn’t sure fitness would ever give me the stability I wanted for my kids.

Over the years, I’ve mentored a lot of trainers. Many come into this field thinking it’s all workouts, fun and flexible hours. The hard reality is, it’s a service industry. You have to earn people’s trust, keep learning, and keep delivering day after day, year after year.

What you’re seeing here isn’t the result of a lucky month. It’s the result of nearly 20 years of showing up before the sun comes up, staying late, answering messages after hours, continuing my education, celebrating clients’ wins, and refusing to cut corners.

There are plenty of things I still question myself about. I wonder if I’m being the best mom I can be. I wonder if I’m the wife Rick deserves. I have insecurities just like everyone else.

But one thing I don’t question

I’m damn good at my job.

And I’ll never stop working to be even better.

Clients come to me looking for a roadmap to reach a goal. Every once in a while, a special client comes along who follows that roadmap to an absolute T. This is the result.

Ivan was the perfect student throughout this process and accomplished this despite facing some major roadblocks early on. I love creating these roadmaps, but what I love even more is seeing this level of dedication and trust in the process.

That dedication paid off with Top 3 finishes in two categories at his very first competition. An incredible accomplishment and just the beginning. Looking forward to a productive off-season and seeing what the future holds.

Fun fact: I started competing in bodybuilding in 2008 and coached dozens of athletes over the years. Around 2016, I stepped away from coaching competitors and honestly thought that chapter of my life was behind me. Ivan brought that passion back. His work ethic, consistency, and willingness to execute reminded me why I fell in love with this sport in the first place.
