Throwback Thursday: Before "active learning" became a buzzword, one Indianapolis school was already proving what happens when students are encouraged to move.

Back in 2016, Indianapolis Public Schools' SUPER School 19 built movement into nearly every part of the school day. Students bounced on yoga balls, used standing desks, debated while walking, practiced reading on trampolines, and learned math through movement. The result? Higher student engagement, improved fitness, and a school so popular that it regularly had waiting lists for enrollment.

Ten years later, the message is still clear: movement isn't a distraction from learning—it can be a powerful tool to support it. As schools continue searching for ways to improve engagement, focus, and student well-being, SUPER School 19 serves as an inspiring reminder of what's possible when physical activity becomes part of the culture.

The school year may be ending, but the data story is just beginning.

As students head into summer break, now is the perfect time to look back at the year and uncover insights that can help shape an even stronger PE program next fall. From MVPA% and FIT Points to participation trends and student engagement, year-end data provides valuable information that can help teachers, schools, and districts celebrate successes and identify opportunities for growth.

The most successful programs don't wait until August to start planning. They use the summer months to review results, set goals, and prepare for the year ahead. What did your data reveal this year?

One school saw the impact. The entire district saw the vision.

After a successful Heart Zones pilot at Grand Avenue Elementary the Sauk Prairie School District made the decision to expand heart rate technology across its Physical Education programs. What started with PE teachers Eric Scheunemann and Jacob Breunig quickly grew into a district-wide commitment to helping students better understand their health, stay engaged in physical activity, and build lifelong fitness habits.

Students loved seeing their effort in real time, and teachers gained new opportunities to connect movement with meaningful health education. It's a powerful example of how one successful implementation can inspire a district-wide investment in student wellness.

Why did Stillwater Area High School choose Heart Zones over other heart rate technology companies?

For PE teacher & coach Darrell Salmi it came down to more than just the technology. It was the experience, science, simplicity, and passion behind the Heart Zones Move Solution. Sal Edwards’ willingness to educate, collaborate, and support teachers made the difference — along with a solution that delivers meaningful student feedback without adding complexity or annual fees.

Nearly a decade later, Stillwater Area Public Schools continues to lead the way in Smart PE with Heart Zones.

When PE technology becomes easier to use, everybody wins.

The Germantown Municipal School District switched to the Heart Zones Move Solution after teachers found their previous heart rate technology difficult to manage and implement. Houston Middle School immediately noticed the difference with simpler setup, easier student management, real-time FIT Points, and the Big Board helping students stay engaged and motivated.

PE teacher Betsy Spurlock shared:
The simplicity of implementing them into our PE programs and the potential of measuring when students are in best frame of mind for learning is what I love most about Heart Zones.

Students also appreciated moving from chest straps to comfortable forearm-worn heart rate sensors that made participation easier during class.

Throwback Thursday: Back in 2016, Harvard Health Publishing explored the connection between exercise and teen depression. Sadly, teen depression is even more widespread today than it was 10 years ago, making the article’s message just as relevant now.

Research highlighted that exercise can help improve symptoms of depression in adolescents, especially when combined with other forms of support and treatment. Movement is not a cure-all, but physical activity can positively impact mood, stress levels, confidence, and overall mental wellness. An important reminder that exercise supports far more than physical health alone.
