A new school year is the perfect time to rethink how we assess students in physical education.

Traditional assessments only tell part of the story. Heart Zones Insights gives PE teachers a better way to use meaningful data to understand student effort, progress, fitness, and engagement while helping students take a more active role in their own learning.

With the school year just getting started, now is the time to explore how better assessment can become part of your PE solution.

First graders learning to understand and regulate their own heart rate? That’s what makes Ben Wells a PE rockstar.

For this week’s Model School Monday, we’re highlighting Ben and Bennett Ranch Elementary in Peyton, Colorado, part of School District 49.

Using the Heart Zones solution, Ben is teaching students as young as first grade to understand their heart rate, recognize activity intensity, and connect movement with what’s happening inside their bodies. He’s even built his own projector cart setup to make real time heart rate data easy for students to see and understand.

It’s an incredible example of what happens when an innovative educator puts the right technology to work. Ben Wells isn’t just getting kids moving. He’s giving them an understanding of their bodies and health that can last a lifetime.

Movement isn’t a break from learning. It’s part of how young brains learn best.

Physical activity does more than build stronger bodies. Research shows that movement can support attention, memory, cognitive function, and academic performance—giving schools another reason to make physical activity a meaningful part of every student’s day.

It’s a powerful reminder that when we give kids more opportunities to move, we’re supporting their brains, their bodies, and their ability to learn.

At Heart Zones, we’re proud to be part of the solution helping schools get students moving.

Working harder doesn’t always mean getting a better workout.

One of the biggest misconceptions about physical activity is that more intensity is always better. But the right intensity depends on the goal. Recovery, endurance, aerobic fitness, and higher-intensity training all ask something different of the body.

That’s especially important in PE, where the same activity can produce very different levels of effort from one student to another.

The Heart Zones solution gives students real-time feedback about their individual effort and gives teachers objective data to help students understand what their bodies are doing.

The goal isn’t always to get into the red.

The goal is to know why you’re in the zone you’re in.

What if students could actually see their bodies calm down in real time?

Coming this October, Heart Zones is introducing The Chill Zone Game — an emotional regulation solution that combines real-time heart rate feedback with six different recovery strategies.

Designed for K–12 students, The Chill Zone Game helps young people practice calming down after an emotionally charged moment, discover which recovery methods work best for them, and build skills for greater resilience and emotional regulation.

Stay tuned. We’ll be sharing more about The Chill Zone Game soon.

What if technology in PE gave teachers more time to teach, not more to manage?

At Mabry Middle School, part of Cobb County Schools in Marietta, Georgia, PE Teacher Chad Oates says the Heart Zones solution is doing exactly that:

“What I like most about using Heart Zones is being able to refocus my time, attention, and efforts on teaching rather than crowd control.”

By using real-time, personalized data, Mabry has created a more student-centered PE environment while seeing increases in student motivation, cognitive skills, and even laps on the PACER test.

And sometimes the best measure of success is hearing a student say:

“I get it now coach!”

What happens when schools make movement part of the learning experience?

This article takes a look at how schools are working to balance academics with opportunities for students to move, play, and stay active throughout the school day. It’s a conversation that remains just as relevant today: physical activity isn’t separate from student success — it can be an important part of it.

At Heart Zones, our solution helps schools bring purpose and measurable data to physical activity, giving students real-time feedback while providing educators with meaningful insight into effort, engagement, and progress.

When we give students more opportunities to move, we’re not taking away from learning. We’re helping create students who are more engaged and ready to learn.
