CONFIDENCE WITH KINDNESS IS WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO BUILD.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and throughout the month we'll be sharing some of the principles we teach our students about confidence, kindness, respect and standing up for themselves and others.

Martial arts can help children become physically stronger. But strength comes with responsibility. We want our students to have the confidence to stand tall. The courage to speak up. The judgment to walk away when appropriate. The compassion to recognize when someone else needs help. And the self-control to understand that knowing how to defend yourself doesn't mean looking for opportunities to fight.

One of the most powerful things a confident child can learn is: You don't have to make someone else feel small in order to feel strong. That's the kind of strength we want to develop.

Throughout October, we'll share more practical lessons families can use to help children develop confidence, kindness and resilience—and help create environments where bullying is less likely to thrive.

SOMETIMES THE BEST PART OF KARATE IS WHO'S STANDING BESIDE YOU.

Children may walk through our doors because their parents want them to develop confidence, focus, discipline or learn martial arts.

But something else often happens along the way. They make friends. They find teammates. Older students encourage younger students. Students celebrate one another's accomplishments. They practice together, laugh together, struggle through difficult things together—and grow together.

For some children, finding a place where they feel comfortable and accepted can be just as important as learning another technique. That's part of what we want Master Method to be.. A place to learn. A place to grow. A place to be challenged. And a place to belong.

Come experience Master Method Karate, the place where everyone belongs.

MASTER MINUTE: THE THREE RULES OF CONCENTRATION

Over the past few weeks, we've been working with our students on a skill that can help them not only in karate—but at school, at home and throughout their lives:
CONCENTRATION.

Grandmaster Marco teaches our students three simple rules to help them remember what good concentration looks like:
#1 — FOCUS MY EYES
Look at what you're supposed to be paying attention to.
#2 — FOCUS MY MIND
Think about what you're supposed to be doing or learning.
#3 — FOCUS MY BODY
Control your body so you're ready to listen, learn and perform.
Simple enough for a child to remember—but useful at any age.
And like every other skill we teach, concentration gets stronger with practice.

PARENTS: Here's an easy way to reinforce the lesson at home.
The next time your child is doing homework, reading, practicing something or listening to instructions, simply ask:
“Where are your eyes?”
“Where is your mind?”
“What is your body doing?”

Three simple reminders can help children learn to recognize and manage their own attention.
Watch today's Master Minute with your child and practice the Three Rules of Concentration together!

This is at the heart of what we mean when we teach our students to “Be a Champion.”
Achievement matters. But eventually, leadership means using what you've learned to encourage, help and positively influence others.
A Sunday message from our Grandmaster..

THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I’VE ACCOMPLISHED DON’T HANG ON MY WALL.

Over time and as one gets older, the definition of success changes. You begin to realize that the greatest measure of what you’ve accomplished isn’t necessarily what you received. It’s what you gave.

Did you help someone believe in themselves? Did you encourage someone when they wanted to quit? Did you help a child become more confident? Did you make someone’s day a little better? Did you leave something behind that will continue helping people after you’re gone?

Those things don’t always come with trophies. There may never be an award ceremony. Sometimes you may never even know the difference you made.

But I’ve come to believe those may be some of the greatest victories of all.

Helping other people discover the champion within themselves has given my championships a greater purpose.

As another week begins, don’t only ask yourself: “What do I want to accomplish?”
Also ask: “Who can I help along the way?”

THE BEST PART ISN'T WHEN THE BOARD BREAKS.
Watch what happens immediately afterward. That moment of: “I DID IT! That's the part we love.

Because confidence isn't always something children have before they attempt something difficult. Sometimes confidence develops because they attempted it.

They listened. They prepared. They focused. They tried. And they discovered they could do something they weren't completely sure they could do. Those experiences matter.

Every small accomplishment gives a child another piece of evidence: I can learn.
I can improve. I can do hard things.
The board may only take a second to break. The confidence created by the experience can last much longer.

BEFORE CHILDREN CAN LEARN FROM US, THEY NEED TO KNOW WE CARE ABOUT THEM.

Sometimes teaching means demonstrating a technique.
Sometimes it's correcting a stance.
And sometimes it's simply getting down to a child's level, making them smile and helping them feel comfortable enough to try.
Especially with our youngest students, those little moments matter.

A martial arts school can feel like a very big place to a small child.
New people.
New rules.
New movements.
New expectations.
So we start by building trust.
Then, little by little, we challenge them.

Try this.
You can do it.
Let's try again.
And eventually:
“Look what I did!”
That's how skills develop.
But it's also how confidence begins to grow.

At Master Method Karate, we don't simply want children to learn martial arts.
We want them to discover what they're capable of becoming.

MASTER MINUTE: FOCUS MY BODY!

We've reached Rule #3 in our Three Rules of Concentration!
Over the past few weeks, our students have learned:
Rule #1 — Focus My Eyes!
Look at what you're supposed to be paying attention to.
Rule #2 — Focus My Mind!
Bring your thoughts back to what you're learning or doing.
And today:
Rule #3 — FOCUS MY BODY!

Because our body can help—or interfere with—our ability to concentrate.
Think about how much harder it is to listen when we're constantly moving around, playing with something, turning around or doing something completely different from what we're supposed to be doing.

Learning to control our body is another part of learning to control our attention.
That's one reason martial arts can be such a wonderful environment for developing concentration.
Children aren't simply told to focus.
They get opportunities to practice it.
Eyes.
Mind.
Body.

Three simple ideas children can remember and use at karate, at school and at home.
PARENTS: Try all three together this week.
Before homework, reading or another activity that requires concentration, ask:
“Where are your eyes?”
“Where is your mind?”
“What is your body doing?”
Three quick questions can become a simple family tool for practicing focus.

Before he became our Grandmaster, he had to learn many of the same lessons we teach our students today.

Winning is exciting—but learning how to respond when things don't go your way may be an even more important lesson.
A little Master Method history and a Sunday lesson from Grandmaster Marco.

SOME OF MY GREATEST LESSONS CAME FROM THE FIGHTS I DIDN'T WIN.

When people hear “7-Time World Champion,” naturally they think about the victories.
But there were losses too.

There were times I got knocked down.
There were disappointments.
There were moments when I had to decide whether a setback was going to stop me—or teach me.
Early in my fighting career, I fought an opponent who knocked me down with a powerful left hook.
I got back up.
He knocked me down again.
I got back up again.
I lost that fight.

At the time, it certainly didn't feel like something that would eventually become an important part of my success.
But it taught me something I have carried with me ever since:
Losing can be part of winning.

A setback can expose what you need to improve.
A mistake can make you wiser.
A difficult experience can make you stronger.
And sometimes getting knocked down teaches you something winning never could.

The important question isn't whether everything goes according to plan.
It is:
What are you going to do next?

I eventually went on to become a 7-Time World Champion.
But some of the lessons that helped me get there began on nights when I didn't win.

Whatever knocked you down this week, get back up.
Learn from it.
Grow from it.
And keep moving forward.
Believe It. Achieve It.

MASTER MINUTE: FOCUS MY MIND!
Last week, Grandmaster Marco taught our students the first Rule of Concentration:
#1 — Focus My Eyes.
This week we're adding Rule #2:
FOCUS MY MIND!
Because looking at something doesn't necessarily mean we're thinking about it!
Children—and adults—can be looking directly at a teacher while their mind is somewhere completely different.
What am I doing after school?
What are my friends doing?
What's for dinner?
What was that noise?
Learning to recognize when our thoughts wander and then bring our attention back to what we're doing is an important skill.
And just like a martial arts technique, it gets better with practice.
At Master Method, we're not expecting children to have perfect concentration.
We're teaching them how to develop it.
PARENTS: Here's this week's challenge.
Ask your child:
“When you notice your mind wandering at school or while doing homework, what can you do to bring your focus back?”
Then practice together.
Next week we'll complete our Three Rules of Concentration with:
Rule #3 — Focus My Body!
