We keep asking why the U.S. struggles to produce consistent World Cup contenders.
We have incredible athletes. Great facilities. Talented coaches.
But in many of the countries still competing, kids grow up playing soccer everywhere. Streets. Parks. Empty lots. Every day. The game becomes part of who they are, not just another scheduled activity.
The pay-to-play system has helped organize youth soccer, but organization alone doesn’t create world-class players.
Great players are built through thousands of unstructured touches, creativity, competition, and a genuine love for the game.
Maybe the next step isn’t adding more tournaments.
Maybe it’s creating more opportunities for kids to simply play.
