On August 29, 1782, HMS Royal George sank while anchored at Portsmouth, England. There was no battle, no storm and no collision. A routine repair turned into one of Britain’s deadliest maritime disasters, killing hundreds of people.

Have you ever heard of the Royal George disaster?

🚨 NAME THE NEW DRONE! 🚨

My sister mentioned a while back that my old drone needed a name. Well, the replacement showed up today, so I figured why not make it a contest!

I feel like there should be a prize too… but I have absolutely no idea what yet 😂

🌊 Why does Canadarago Lake look like an underwater rainforest while Otsego Lake can look like an underwater desert?

This underwater drone video from Canadarago Lake in Otsego County, New York really shows the difference.

When I explore Otsego Lake near Cooperstown, NY with the underwater drone, a lot of the deeper lake bottom is wide open and light colored. In places it almost looks like a desert.

Canadarago Lake near Richfield Springs and Schuyler Lake, NY is completely different. Drop the drone down and you’re looking across thick aquatic vegetation that can resemble the top of a rainforest. 🌿

A lot of that difference comes down to depth, sunlight, nutrients and geology.

Otsego Lake reaches roughly 166 feet deep, so much of the lake bottom is simply too deep for enough sunlight to support rooted aquatic plants. Otsego also has areas of light-colored marl on the bottom, helping create that barren, almost desert-like appearance.

Canadarago Lake is much shallower and has large areas where sunlight can reach the bottom. Combine that with available nutrients and you get some incredibly dense aquatic plant growth. Canadarago also has several invasive aquatic species that can contribute to those thick underwater beds.

Of course, Otsego Lake has vegetation in its shallower areas too. But exploring these two Central New York lakes underwater really shows just how different two lakes this close together can be.

🌿 Canadarago Lake: underwater rainforest

This footage is from Canadarago Lake, flying the QYSEA FIFISH V-EVO underwater drone right over the top of that underwater forest.

The craziest part is wondering what’s underneath all of it. 👀
