🎯 MONTANA SHOOTERS — THIS IS ONE WORTH PAYING ATTENTION TO.

Montana could be one step closer to another substantial public shooting range.

FWP is asking for approval to acquire an approximately 86-acre easement near Logan in Gallatin County for a new public shooting facility.

The current concept includes:

🎯 Rifle targets out to 400 yards
🔫 Dedicated pistol and short-range lanes
💥 A shotgun area
🏔️ Public recreational shooting access in the Gallatin Valley
And this isn't just another idea sitting on somebody's desk.

The State Parks and Recreation Board is scheduled to consider the easement on September 22, and FWP recommends approval.

But here's the important part:

Montana shooters still have time to comment BEFORE the decision.

The date is set: December 2, 2026.

The U.S. Supreme Court has officially scheduled oral argument in the landmark cases asking whether the Second Amendment protects AR-15-platform and similar semiautomatic rifles.

But don't let the headlines get ahead of the Court.
There is NO final ruling yet.

The challengers have filed their merits brief. The governments defending the bans still have briefing ahead. Then the justices hear the constitutional arguments December 2.

🇺🇸 THE SUPREME COURT IS TAKING UP THE AR-15.

This isn't another petition waiting to see whether SCOTUS will take the case.

The Supreme Court has officially granted review.

The question now before the Court is straightforward—and enormous:

Does the Second Amendment protect the right to possess AR-15-platform and similar semiautomatic rifles?

The challengers filed their opening merits brief on August 28, and new amicus briefs continued arriving this week. The Court's official docket confirms the case is now in merits briefing, with the governments' briefs currently due October 21. Supreme Court

But don't let the headlines get ahead of the Court:

⚠️ SCOTUS has NOT struck down AR-15 bans.
⚠️ There is NO final Supreme Court ruling yet.

🇺🇸 MONTANA JUST PUT ITS NAME BEHIND ONE OF THE BIGGEST MAGAZINE-BAN FIGHTS SITTING AT THE U.S. SUPREME COURT.

And here's the part everyone needs to get right:

SCOTUS HAS NOT GRANTED THE CASE.

Not yet.

In Gator's Custom Guns v. Washington, the Supreme Court is being asked whether magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds are “Arms” protected by the Second Amendment.

The Washington Supreme Court said they aren't.

Gator's says they are.

And Montana, Idaho and 25 other states filed a brief asking the United States Supreme Court to take the case and reverse.

What makes this especially interesting?

The petition has survived an extraordinary number of Supreme Court conferences without being denied—and Gator's filed another supplemental brief on August 3.

So the fight is still alive.

🇺🇸 MORE THAN 1,400 MONTANA SHOOTERS HAVE SPOKEN. NOW THE QUESTION IS: WHAT SHOULD MONTANA DO WITH WHAT THEY SAID?

Montana is working on something that could shape shooting access across our state for years to come.

Under HB 899, the state created a task force to examine the future of new and improved shooting facilities in Montana. More than 1,400 Montana shooters have already weighed in on what they use, what they're missing, and what they'd like to see available.

That raises a question especially important for rural Montana:

🎯 Should we build one premier destination shooting complex?

🏔️ Or should Montana prioritize regional ranges closer to the communities that actually use them?

There's room in this discussion for long-range rifle facilities, pistol ranges, trap and s***t, sporting clays, archery, hunter education, youth programs, competitions, training—and improvements to the ranges Montana already has.

But here's the part worth remembering: Montana hasn't selected a location or approved a giant new shooting complex. HB 899 created the planning process, and the task force still has work to do before its final recommendations are due in 2027.

For those of us in Northwest Montana, access matters. A world-class range hundreds of miles away doesn't necessarily help the hunter who needs to verify zero before season or the family looking for a safe place to introduce a new shooter.

🇺🇸 MONTANA GUN OWNERS: THE FEDERAL NFA VICTORY JUST RAN HEADFIRST INTO MONTANA LAW.

And Montana's Attorney General is now telling prosecutors, sheriffs and police chiefs how serious that conflict could be.

On August 27, Attorney General Austin Knudsen issued new guidance addressing suppressors, SBRs and SBSs after the federal victory in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF.

Here's the problem:

The federal government is now blocked from enforcing major NFA registration requirements against certain protected parties.

But Montana still has laws written around that federal registration system.

And that creates some potentially serious consequences right here at home.

There's also a part of Knudsen's guidance that deserves far more attention:

⚖️ Montana DOJ says it does not want otherwise law-abiding Montanans prosecuted for federally protected conduct.

⚖️ The AG says investigations under several affected Montana statutes may be legally tenuous.

⚖️ And Montana prosecutors are being asked to send these cases to the Montana DOJ for review before filing charges.

That's a much bigger story than simply saying, “Suppressors are off the NFA.”

They aren't — at least not that simply.

🇺🇸 NORTHWEST MONTANA — This one hits close to home.

Montana has officially set its 2026–27 recreational wolf harvest quota at 300 wolves.

But here's the part that matters most for those of us around Eureka, Rexford and the To***co Valley:

REGION 1 GETS 131.

That's the largest regional wolf quota anywhere in Montana.

FWP recommended a statewide quota of 250.

Last year's quota was 452.

The Fish and Wildlife Commission ultimately landed at 300 and restored regional quotas, fundamentally changing how this year's wolf harvest will be managed.

And there's another major piece behind the decision:

Montana's updated population model now estimates roughly 725 wolves statewide, substantially below the previous estimate of approximately 1,094.

🇺🇸MONTANA — this one happened in OUR federal circuit.

California and Giffords went to federal court arguing that ATF wasn't regulating enough unfinished AR-style receivers.

They wanted the federal government to go further.

The Ninth Circuit just rejected their challenge.

And because Montana is part of the Ninth Circuit, this is one worth understanding.

But before the internet turns the decision into “80% lowers are completely unregulated again!”, that's not what the court ruled.

The judges threw the case out because California and Giffords failed to establish constitutional standing.

That distinction matters.

So does ATF's current line between raw material, an unfinished receiver blank and something that legally becomes a regulated firearm receiver.
