These past few weeks have been a challenging time for our community. Fires, evacuations and closures have brought uncertainty and a heaviness throughout the Truckee Meadows. We’re grateful for the efforts of firefighters and first responders, the generosity of local organizations and businesses, and the outpouring of support from neighbors and loved ones. Thank you for looking out for one another, and for the reminder of what makes our community so special.

As our colleagues and students on the academic side of Truckee Meadows Community College kick off a new semester today, we wish you the best, and thank you to our TMCC EPIC students for your patience as we reschedule classes which were affected by the Hawk fire. In addition, TMCC also offers resources such as counseling services and Wizard’s Warehouse (food and personal hygiene supply pantries) at each of our campus locations. You don’t have to navigate this alone, reach out to the counseling center at 775-673-7060 to learn more.

As of today, officials report that ‘go-now’ evacuation red zones have reduced from 42,000 to 5,000 residents, more than half of those affected now have power restored, and the east side of U.S. 395 is now safe to return. While not all zones are yet cleared or have power restored, we are grateful that progress has allowed many employees and students to return home.

This enables TMCC to reopen for in-person and remote classes and work on campus tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Should you need additional support or flexibility, please communicate with your instructor or supervisor. Our priority is your safety.

TMCC continues to keep everyone affected by the Hawk Fire in our thoughts. While containment has improved and some evacuation areas have been lifted, active evacuation zones remain in effect, power outages continue and K–12 school closures will continue tomorrow.

Due to the continued displacement of many of our students and employees, all TMCC campus operations at all locations will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 25.

There will be no in-person or online classes and no in-person or remote work, except emergency services teams and supervisors.
