Imagine walking into your practice and seeing your team smile because they're happy you're there.
That's the kind of leadership Brandi Carter talks about in this episode, and it's something our industry needs more of.
People remember how leaders make them feel long after they forget what was said in a meeting. When your team knows you care about them as people first, the conversations about accountability become easier because trust is already there.

Imagine building a culture so strong that people move across the country just to keep working with you.
That's exactly what we get into with Brandi Carter on this week's episode of The Real Talk of Dental.
The dental industry spends a lot of time talking about production, KPIs, growth, and profitability, but we don't spend nearly enough time talking about the people behind those numbers. Brandi has spent years building teams that don't stay because they're forced to. They stay because they feel cared for, challenged, and supported.
We also talked about why leaders need their own support systems, why servant leadership isn't soft leadership, and why DSO executives need to spend more time inside their practices instead of making decisions from conference rooms. The businesses that thrive over the long term almost always have one thing in common: they never lose sight of their people.

Someone steps into a leadership role and spends the first few months convinced they're failing.
Not because they are.
Because they're measuring themselves against someone who's been doing the job for five or ten years.
I've coached new office managers who compare themselves to directors of operations.
New CEOs comparing themselves to founders.
New leaders comparing themselves to the person who built the systems they're now trying to learn.
Of course it feels impossible.
You're comparing your beginning to someone else's experience.
Every leader you admire had a first day.
They forgot things. They asked questions. They made decisions they would handle differently today.
The difference isn't talent.
It's time.
Leadership isn't something you master in a weekend, a conference, or a certification. It's built conversation by conversation, mistake by mistake, and decision by decision.
Give yourself permission to be new.
Stay curious. Keep learning. Ask for feedback. Celebrate the progress nobody else can see yet.
Six months from now, you'll look back and realize you knew more than you gave yourself credit for, and you'll also see how much you've grown.
That's how leadership works.
If you've been putting impossible pressure on yourself lately, comment ELE. I'd love to chat.

Get comfortable telling people why they matter.
Think about that. Not assuming they know but actually telling them.
Leadership isn't only about accountability.
It's also about helping people see the value they bring.

One of the hardest things for high achievers isn't working hard.
It's accepting help.
I've seen incredible leaders carry work that should have been shared because somewhere along the way they learned that asking for help meant they weren't capable enough.
So they keep saying yes.
Yes to another project. Yes to another meeting. Yes to another late night.
Not because nobody else could do it.
Because letting go felt uncomfortable.
Here's what I've learned.
The strongest leaders aren't the ones who hold everything together by themselves.
They're the ones who know where their time creates the most value, trust their people with meaningful work, and create space to think instead of living in constant reaction.
Delegation isn't about getting rid of work.
It's about making room for the work that only you can do.
Your team grows because you trusted them.
You grow because you stopped trying to prove you could carry everything alone.
That's a better way to lead.
If you're working on letting go without lowering your standards, comment CLARITY. I'd love to chat.

What if your biggest staffing problem isn't staffing at all?
Nearly half of dental assistants are considering leaving the profession.
Not because they don't love dentistry.
Because many no longer feel valued.
In this week's episode of The Real Talk of Dental, with Kevin Henry we'll talk about why assistants are walking away, what leaders are missing, and why every person on a dental team matters more than we often realize.
One of my favorite parts of this conversation was using sports to explain leadership. Great coaches don't just build talent. They help every player understand why their role matters.
The same is true in dentistry.
If you're leading a team, this episode will challenge the way you think about culture, retention, and what keeps great people around.

"It's fine."
I've coached enough leaders to know those two words almost never mean what they say.
Most of the time, they're covering disappointment, frustration, hurt, or a need that hasn't found its voice yet.
We tell ourselves we're keeping the peace.
We're keeping the meeting moving. We're avoiding conflict. We're being the bigger person.
But nothing gets resolved.
The conversation doesn't disappear. It just moves underground.
Then six weeks later, someone misses another deadline, a comment lands the wrong way, or one more request gets added to your plate, and suddenly you're reacting to far more than what just happened.
That moment didn't create the frustration.
It uncovered everything that never got said.
Healthy leadership isn't about saying everything the second you feel it.
It's about learning to recognize when something matters, giving yourself enough space to understand it, and then having the courage to say what needs to be said.
You don't have to have perfect words.
You just have to stop pretending you're okay when you're not.
That one shift can change your relationships, your team, and the way people experience you as a leader.
If this feels familiar, comment CLARITY. I'd love to chat more.

The people who look the strongest are often carrying the heaviest load.
I think so many of us have accepted responsibilities that were never actually ours.
Leadership isn't about carrying everyone else's emotional weight.
It's about knowing when to put the backpack down.
