LakeQuest 2026 Theme: INTENTION

To-Shin Do (and related ninja martial arts) are known for their emphasis on sensing the intentions of others as well as skills related to projecting (or concealing) our own intent. But, when people ask about the key to developing these seemingly extra-ordinary skills the answer sometimes surprises them: train with intention.

When it’s your turn to be the attacker (uke) in training, don’t just give your partner the form or shape of the attack—give them something to feel. Give the emotional intensity and intent of a real attacker. (At least sometimes!) And, as defender (tori), choose to step fully into the experience that’s being offered, working with your senses and ability to project the intent that will ensure your success.

Intention brings the training to life, transforming techniques from clinical theory into dynamic, realistic experiences that prepare you for the unexpected on and off the mats.

And, when we’re prepared to meet extreme chaos or violence with clear intent, it’s much easier to carry ourselves with purpose through the ups and downs of our everyday lives!

Eight QMAR members made the trip up to Cincinnati Quest Martial Arts for the An-shu Rumiko Seminar in July and a few even continued the journey north to Budokai Martial Arts for the Fighting Fire Workshop. What an adventure! 🤩

We highly encourage our students (and instructor team) to get out there and experience the wider world of To-Shin Do by participating in seminars and events at other schools.

Treating yourself to focused training time in a new environment with new training partners is a great way to shake things up, amplifying your focus and breathing new life and motivation into your training!

And, if you travel often, like some of our folks do, then, instead of novelty, you get to build familiarity with our wider community and feel even more connected to the ever-evolving vision of To-Shin Do.

Check out the video recap from the Rumiko Seminar (filmed by Ren), plus photos of our QMAR folks in the comments!

Wishing one of our fellow North Carolina To-Shin Do schools, Elevo Dynamics, and their community and guests an awesome weekend of training at their annual camping event SpiritQuest in nearby Fayetteville. 🤩

Quest Raleigh Instructors, Kaitlin "Dantoshi" Voith and Kobe Straker will be teaching sessions at the event today. And Bryan "Toutoshi" Griffin will be there tomorrow!

We loved having Elevo's dojo-cho and our dear friend Hakim "Intoshi" Isler (Hakim Isler - Black MacGyver) at LakeQuest last year! (Photo of Kobe & Hakim from LakeQuest 2025.)

More opportunities to train To-Shin Do in the woods this year—check out the list! https://toshindo.online/toshindo-events/

New To-Shin Do black belts!!

Congratulations to dojo teens, Miles, Riggs, and Anika on their advancement to shodan, 1st degree black belt!

Enjoy this short video of their final "boss battle" against Bryan Griffin. By this time, they had already been tested for hours on their technique, knowledge, and endurance (including carrying giant heavy logs through the hilly forest) and it was time for their final test -- to take their black belt!

These guys showed that they can push through discomfort, frustration, and exhaustion. They worked together, supported one another with positive encouragement, and accomplished something rare. They'll remember this achievement for the rest of their lives. Congratulations Miles, Riggs, and Anika!!!
