It is with profound sadness that we, The Ebony Anglers, extend our deepest condolences to the people of Barbados in the sudden loss of Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox, Chief Fisheries Officer of Barbados. Dr. Cox had a true call on her life, that she fulfilled with great fervor and zeal. She was a champion for women and youth, and for the sustainability of the fishing community at large.
Dr. Cox was a woman of great vision, and her impact had a lasting global reach. Throughout our time of working with her, it was clear that our missions were aligned. In 2024, Dr. Cox contacted the Ebony Anglers as part of her initiative to rebuild the aging harvesting sector of the island’s fishing economy. She was drawn to our accomplishments as award-winning Black female anglers in the American sportfishing world, and to our work teaching youth the fundamental skills of fishing and boating. In 2025, our collective work with her produced the island’s first Ebony Anglers Fishing Fundamentals Junior Anglers Camp for 25 amazing Bajan youth. In addition, she invited the Ebony Anglers to compete in the 35th Annual Sir Charles Williams International Fishing Tournament. The camp seeded a growing love of fishing in young people, that Dr. Cox hoped would then result in them seeking careers in the fishing sector. Resulting from the success of the 2025 camp initiative, our joint efforts continued with the 2nd Annual Junior Anglers Camp in April of 2026.
Dr. Cox hosted the Ebony Anglers with impeccable professionalism, and profound respect for our shared missions. She introduced us not only to the beauty of her island home, but to the hard-working fisherfolk whose daily sacrifices make the economy thrive.
With Dr. Cox we found common ground and shared passion in the work to raise the awareness and influence of sportfishing among the youth and women of Barbados. We valued her experience and brilliance, and her dedication to the upliftment of the fisherfolk of Barbados. We honor her impeccable leadership, and her passion for this work. We will truly miss her.
