New to yoga? Wondering which class is right for you?

If you’ve ever looked at a yoga schedule and thought, “what exactly is Yin, Hatha, Vinyasa, Power, and Chair Yoga?” you’re not alone.

Each style offers a different experience and supports different goals, bodies, and seasons of life.

I hope this guide helps take some of the guesswork out of choosing your first or next class.

A couple quick notes:

I’m a yoga teacher, not a doctor. The health considerations mentioned are for educational purposes only. If you’re pregnant, recovering from an injury or surgery, living with a chronic health condition, or have questions about whether a particular style of practice is appropriate for you, please check with your healthcare provider.

There are as many styles as their are students, these are just a few.

🌱 Different seasons of life call for different practices, and your needs will change over time.

Yoga invites us to stay present, not to stay the same.

Responding to your current reality is not “starting over.” It’s part of the journey 🌀

Ready to begin? Check your local libraries for free community yoga classes, and local studios to explore different styles and find a class that feels like home.

Off the mat in Eagle Pose 🦅

Named for Garuda, the mythical king of birds, Eagle Pose symbolizes focus, resilience, and the ability to rise above challenges. Beyond its symbolism, it’s a posture I return to when I’m feeling untethered, overwhelmed, or otherwise out of control.

The crossing of the arms and legs, the balancing challenge, and the muscular engagement (stay with me) provide significant proprioceptive input, the sensory information that helps us understand where our body is in space.

In trauma-informed movement, proprioceptive input is associated with grounding, body awareness, self-regulation, and a greater sense of organization within the body.

Combined with a steady gaze, Eagle Pose invites us out of racing thoughts and back into the present moment.

Not for balance
Not for flexibility
Not even for strength

For containment.

That feeling of being grounded. Held. Anchored.

Not in the uncertain, ever-changing circumstances of our lives, but in the quiet, steady center of our own being.

Most of the ways we steal aren’t obvious.
They’re subtle, habitual, often unintentional.

In a culture that constantly asks us to buy more, prove more, become more, Asteya invites us to pause and notice how that message shapes our choices, our nervous systems, and our sense of self.

Often translated as non-stealing, Asteya asks us to notice when enough is enough.

Off the mat, Asteya shows up when we stop chasing what we think will finally make us feel complete. When we notice desire before it turns into overwork, overspending, or over giving. When we say no before resentment builds. When we stop treating rest as negotiable, stop rushing our healing, or stop taking on more than our bodies, finances, or relationships can sustain.

This isn’t about settling, shrinking, or stagnation. It’s about choosing a way forward that doesn’t require force.

When capacity is honored, we stop stealing from the future to survive the present, and contentment arises naturally. Not because we bypass discomfort, fatigue, grief, or desire, but because we stop exhausting ourselves in the chase for more.

Asteya isn’t deprivation.
It’s liberation.

Let’s practice together.

roots of practice 🌱 satya (truthfulness)

Satya is the second Yama on the eight-limbed path of yoga.

It invites honest self-reflection, asking us to notice the stories we carry, the conditioning we’ve absorbed, and the ways we resist what we already know.

On the mat, Satya can look like listening to your body without comparison or judgment, honoring limits, and responding honestly to sensation.

Off the mat, it shows up in communication, boundaries, relationships, and the choices we make when no one else is watching.

In yoga philosophy, Satya (truth) follows Ahimsa (non-violence) because truth without compassion can cause harm, and compassion without truth can become self-betrayal.

For many of us, misalignment shows up quietly, especially during the holiday season:
we say yes when we mean no,
we overspend,
we override our bodies and our nervous systems,
or avoid hard truths to keep the peace.

Satya is a lifelong practice of aligning how we live with what we value, while staying compassionate toward ourselves and each other.

Yoga, in this way, becomes less about perfect shapes and more about living in integrity.

🪞Reflection:
Where am I saying yes when I mean no?
What truth am I avoiding to keep the peace?
What would honesty rooted in compassion look like right now?

Let’s practice together.

⚠️ this post references domestic violence, coercive control, and financial insecurity.

Though Domestic Violence Awareness Month has passed, the realities remain.

As SNAP benefits are reduced, many families are left to stretch safety, dignity, and survival across limited resources.

When stability and support are stripped away, control and harm often grow, at home and within the systems meant to protect us.

Ahimsa, or non-violence, calls us to respond to harm with compassionate action, in our homes, our communities, and ourselves.

🕊️ If this hits home, you are not alone.

Things have slowed down in this space.
This is a living example of what authenticity and self-care might look like in practice.

It’s about tuning in, not tuning out.
Shifting awareness away from the outside world and coming home to what’s within.

That kind of listening is central to the practice,
in life and on the mat.
This is embodiment: choose presence over performance, and let your truth lead.

To those who’ve reached out, shown up,
and held me gently — thank you for the reminder:
community isn’t just connection, it’s care.

I’ll share my schedule and any updates here.
Otherwise, this space may remain quiet as I return to the deeper parts of practice that keep me grounded and whole.

Thank you for walking with me,
even in silence.

In loving practice,
Rhiannon
