Getting an acid-etched San Mai blade right is always a balancing act.
Acid brings out the drama in the Damascus layers, but it can leave the exposed core steel looking dull, flat, and muddy. A full-sized bench stone is too blunt an instrument here—one slip and you scrape off all that etched topography you just spent hours bringing to life.
That’s where a tiny shard of Uchigumori comes in.
Working by feel: Holding the whetstone directly against the blade lets you feel the steel beneath your fingertips, guiding the stone with micro-pressure right up to the lamination line without crossing it.
The magic of natural slurry: As the stone breaks down, the grit turns milky and soft. It cleans away the heavy acid residue without scratching the hardened edge.
The final harmony: It cuts away the harsh, chemical gray of the core bevel, replacing it with a soft, misty finish that lets the crisp edge pop against the rolling Damascus above.
Sometimes the best tool for the job isn't a massive piece of equipment, but a thumbnail-sized rock and a lot of patience.
