Every practice, come to the mats with a plan. You know the curriculum. You know the coach’s proclivities. Ask yourself, knowing what I can reasonably expect in today’s practice, what is something unique to my game that fits with what they’re showing? How can I improve that aspect today, a training day. We are always training.

No guard pulling. Learn to wrestle from an Olympian instead.

Julia Salata is an Olympic athlete and an IBJJF Pans gold medalist. She’s back Sunday for our monthly co-ed wrestling session. Come learn how to educate your opponents on the effects of gravity.

Sunday, Sept. 20, 11 a.m. Open to ages 12 and up. No jiu-jitsu or wrestling experience necessary. Free for PBJJ members, $40 for non-members.

Always training.

“Should I compete?”

It’s a question we get a lot at Princeton BJJ — and one only the athlete can answer. But we’ll say this: Competition will focus your jiu-jitsu like nothing else. A date on the calendar with consequences attached makes you train and strategize in ways that class alone never will.

Ask any of our 10 gutsy competitors from this weekend’s Jiu Jitsu World League. There were outstanding performances on the mat — including some textbook takedowns — and every one of them looked better than the last time out. Our two first-timers handled themselves beautifully. Both say they’re going back.

Always training. On to the next one.

Things get a bit more serious when strikes enter the equation. Strikes are light and controlled. The reaction is what we’re training.

Jiu Jitsu is a self-defense art before it’s anything else. We hope no student ever has to escape mount under strikes. We train it anyway.

Jiu Jitsu in America had humble beginnings. The local blue belt was often the best and closest authority. The latest DVD instructional was coveted alpha wisdom. Any flat surface, indoor or outdoor, was trainable if you had enough puzzle mats.

Last month, PBJJ had the pleasure of joining West Windsor PD’s National Night Out. Our patchwork of puzzle mats and gymnastics pads became a showcase for the art. Curious onlookers, and a handful of challengers, were drawn to the strange spectacle of grapplers practicing their craft in the open.

The night was a reminder that Jiu Jitsu doesn’t need to be so precious. All it asks of us are some mats, the drive to train, and a lot of heart.

We are always training.
