Last night, we had an amazing time exploring variations of shime and goshin with Professor Hudson and Sensei McGrath. And of course we had to take a group photo.

A promotion like this is never earned alone. On Wednesday night, we celebrated Serge‘s promotion to Nikyu, 2nd degree Brown belt. This milestone reflects his dedication, resilience, and the countless hours he spent training, teaching, and supporting others on the mat. Serge’s journey is a reminder that growth in Danzan Ryu is built through community, through instructors who guide us, training, partners who challenges, and a dojo Ohana that grows stronger together. We’re proud of all the work that brought you here and grateful for the heart you bring to the dojo. Congratulations, Serge!

Professor Jeremy Jones had the privilege of teaching alongside esteemed Danzan Ryu Jujitsu colleagues at Zanshin dojo in Salem, reconnecting with the lineage, friendships, and traditions that help shaped his journey. Here, Professor Jones demonstrates Hadaka Jime Ichi with Drew, one of our senior Brown belts from North Portland dojo. Moments like these remind us that the art is carried forward through mentorship, community, and a shared commitment to learning.

Part 2 - Living the Teachings, will look at how these principles come alive on the mat – through training, perseverance, and the spirit of Kokua that binds the dojo together. Because the true meaning of these teachings is not just studied, it’s practiced. 🥋
