Summer is full of extra activities, travel, and events. While these are fun and special, they disrupt our normal routines and can add to everyday stress. This stress builds up in our bodies without us even realizing. This build-up of stress activates the sympathetic nervous system (the fight or flight state) and increases cortisol levels. The body responds by bracing or tightening, often in the chest and abdomen, making sleep difficult and creating feelings of being scattered or irritable. When cortisol levels remain high at night, our bodies are not able to be in repair mode – our healing and digestion are impeded. Restorative yoga offers the body time to relax, rest, reconnect, and shift the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest state) to be more dominant. Restorative yoga guides you in finding physical comfort in a quiet, safe, and warm environment; everything you need for your nervous system to downshift.
