Four U17 ballers from Capital Fútbol Club (CFC) in Salem were invited to trial with the New England Revolution MLS Next Academy in early August.

HS juniors Lucas Lee (South Salem High) and Kelton Curry (McMinnville HS) joined Cascade HS varsity players Julian Cabrera (jr.) and Enrique Alvarez (soph.) for 5 days of training and evaluation at the NE Revolution facility in Foxborough, MA.

The “Capital Cuatro” are all teammates on the CFC 2009/U17 ECNL squad.

Congratulations to these up and coming ballers. The future of youth soccer in Oregon’s Willamette Valley is bright 🤩

Callan Spear, a 6-foot-2, 160-pound junior defender who led the Beavers to a 18-1-1 record and the Class 6A state championship this past season, has been named a 2025-2026 Gatorade Player of the Year in Oregon!

Spear registered 6 goals on the season and anchored a defense that only surrendered only 9 while recording 13 shutouts. Spear scored the equalizer in the state championship game against Grant to force overtime and converted the game-winning PK in extra time.

The Oregon High School Coaches Association’s Player of the Year, he was also a TopDrawerSoccer First Team Best XI selection.

Spear has volunteered as a camp counselor and coordinator on behalf of his high school’s summer basketball programs. He has also donated his time to multiple community service initiatives, including Jam the Dam, which is a school-wide fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Oregon.

Imagine checking the lineup and realizing you’re lining up against your own head coach!

The UPSL Oregon conference match between Inter PDX and Vancouver Victory on June 6th was a matter of Family Ties on the Center Line as former New York Red Bulls MLS 1st Round Pick Niko Devera took the pitch with a twist: playing directly against three of the ECNL players he is set to coach this upcoming season at Vancouver’s Columbia Premier Soccer Club.

Centerback Amar Hadzibegovic and midfielder Lucas Angelback - high school teammates as juniors at Skyview - striker/winger Cole White (jr. at Oregon state champion Beaverton) and forward Diego Giron (jr. at Jesuit, not pictured) will suit up for Coach Niko on the CPSC U19 ECNL squad this fall.

On Sunday, however, White found himself battling his coach for the most of his 60-minute shift, as Devera anchored the Victory defense at left back. The Victory avenged an earlier season 5-0 loss to Inter PDX with a dub this time around.

Different jerseys today. Same mission tomorrow. Good luck to Coach Niko and his players this ECNL season!

Youth Soccer Coach Highlight: Kalif Alhassan (Oregon Surf SC)

Before he was leading the way as Elite Boys DOC for Portland’s MLS Next upstart, Oregon Surf SC, Kalif was a demon midfielder on the pitch, playing for the Portland Timbers in their 1st ever MLS match on March 19, 2011.

But did you know?

🎖️Kalif was the 1st Timber to ever be named MLS Player of the Week?

3️⃣ The speedy attacking midfielder was the 3rd player in Major League Soccer history to open his career with assists in each of his first 3 home games, all Timbers wins

🗽Kalif played for the same team as Brazilian Legend Pelé! Kalif signed with the New York Cosmos in 2017… more than 40 years after Pelé suited up for the club (1975).

⚽️ A career that spanned 15 seasons saw Kalif make his debut at the age of 16 with Ghanaian pro side Liberty Professionals FC.

🤗 No. 98 on the Timbers - seen hugging Kalif in this ESPN clip - wasn’t just his teammate, but also a close friend, roommate and future mate at Oregon Surf: current Lead MLS Next DOC Futty Danso

Share this post to give Kalif the recognition he deserves 💯
