From getting certified by AFAA 16 years ago to having a course approved by them today. 😊 1.9 CEUs for NASM/AFAA professionals when you complete the Legacy Barre Certification.
I’m polishing the course with more photos in the manual and more videos on the training platform, and then the first cohort will begin.
This is a comprehensive, foundational barre certification—there’s a 150 (or so) page manual, instructional videos, one-on-one time with me, group meetings, a written and practical exam, plus class observation and participation hours.
We’re covering history, anatomy, movement principles, all the moves (from Lotte Berk’s original work and more modern barre), how to put these moves together into a class, props and going prop-less, musicality, cueing, and tactile adjustments. Plus the magic 🪄 that takes a class from good to great.

Pretty soon after I started teaching, I realized how much I didn’t know. “I highly recommend anyone teaching any form of group fitness to get certified in group fitness.” Say that out loud and you’ll realize how obvious this is.
The AFAA cert was a few months of home study, with one intense in-person day of learning and testing out (written and practical). I have since gone through ACE for my personal training (if you want to do one-on-one) and group fitness certs.

17 years ago this month, I started teaching a class in Cheshire, CT. I didn’t know what to call it as “barre” wasn’t a commonly used term yet. A friend came up with YoLarates, as the class appeared to have elements of yoga and Pilates in it- with plenty of “Lara” 😉 That magic 🪄 was the barre, that she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
Who knew then that this part-time gig after work would become my entire life?

Let’s talk about what your barre instructor looks like: it does not matter! Period (or exclamation point ❗️)
Five years ago, I was (obviously) five years younger and not knocking on 60 years old. I was also 35 pounds lighter.
Has my instruction suffered because I don’t look “long and lean and toned”? No.
When looking for quality instruction, look for a teacher who has been properly trained. Then look for experience. How they look? Does. Not. Matter.
