Four Best of Martial Arts titles. One Phoenix Dragon community. 🏆

Phoenix Dragon Martial Arts has been named Best of Martial Arts in the 2026 Peninsula Daily News Best of the Olympic Peninsula awards.

Walking through that red door opens up more than a place to train in martial arts. It's the portal to a community that we love: training hard, lots of laughs, and real moments to remember.

To every student, family, instructor, and neighbor who keeps showing up for this place, this one is yours too. ❤️

Thank you, Port Angeles.

The slashing elbow. It's a close-range technique, which means you close the distance quickly.

Master V shows it, the room works it. That's how most things get learned in the adult class: repetition, with someone watching who's got a keen eye.

You don't have to arrive good at it.

Come watch a class. Stay if it's for you.

Ever take your dog for a walk? Then you'll want to know how to fall forward.

The first step is at the wall. Hands meet it, arms take the weight, and the shape is the same as a front fall without the floor. It builds the arm strength and the reflex first.

Start where it's easiest, work down toward the mat. Nobody gets pushed ahead of where they are.

Safer Falling starts October 7. Wednesdays, 2 to 3pm, in Port Angeles. Adults 18 and up, no experience needed.

Two people can know the same drill and still experience it differently. We train to react to the moment, not just go faster and faster.

Where you place your attention, and what comes next: that’s why we drill.

Learning to be thrown is a skill in itself.

Beginners often balk, but it's like anything else, there's a method. And you practice.

And also why we do it on mats and not concrete.

Practice a lot and before you know it, it becomes...fun. 😄

Falling is something many people hope never to do. It is also a skill that can be practiced carefully, gradually, and on mats.

Here, catching an object gives the brain one more job while the body practices a controlled fall.

Looks like recess. It's not.

Back-scoot, then army crawl, both baked into warm-up. While it reads as kids burning off energy before class starts, they're quietly building the same body control that shows up later in every roll, throw, and fall.

Nobody explains that part mid-game. They just keep playing until it isn't a game anymore. It's how they move.

You can't stop every fall. You can learn how to land.

Starting October 7, Master Ventura is teaching a weekly class in Port Angeles for adults who want to get back the activities they've started avoiding, and stop living their life around the possibility of a fall. It meets Wednesdays from 2 to 3pm. Every fall is practiced on mats, starting from the floor and working up, and you are never asked to do more than you're ready for.

In one study, adults with no experience took a single 30-minute lesson and hit the ground with 17 percent less force.

For anyone 18 and up. No experience needed.

Most of the adults who train here talked themselves out of it at least once first.

Too old to start. Figured it was a look-at-me room. Worried about getting hurt. The Adult curriculum answers all three: it starts where you are, the room stays serious without the ego drills, and nobody hands out injuries as a rite of passage.

Hapkido here is joint locks, throws, strikes, ground escapes, and weapons, drilled with a partner who resists. Classes are small. Master V has taught in this room for sixteen years and fixes your form herself.

Come watch a class. Stay if it's for you.

Pad work, especially drills with multiple attackers, is one of the ways we train improvisation and response time in the adult program.

You don’t have to arrive knowing how to do any of it. You come to class, learn the movement, and build from there.
