The first hunt of the year was an amazing way to kick off the season. We never like to say one hunt “sets the tone” for the year because we’ve learned Mother Nature can change plans pretty quickly. We’ve had hurricanes roll through, hunts rescheduled, and seasons take unexpected turns that still ended up being some of our best.

But anytime old friends and repeat clients come back and bring a few new faces with them, it feels like the perfect way to get things started. This crew made their way down from Philly, Houston, and Atlanta and spent three hot, sweaty days in the marsh with us.

The heat didn’t let up, but neither did they, and the marsh rewarded them with some BIG alligators. Couldn’t ask for a better group to kick off another season with!

“Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” — Fred Rogers

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the heroes who showed up when our country needed them most. Firefighters, first responders, service members, neighbors, and ordinary Americans stepped forward with courage, compassion, and selflessness. Their actions reminded us what it means to stand together.
As the sun sets on another beautiful, peaceful day in the marsh, we pause to remember those who never made it home, the families forever changed, and the heroes whose bravery will never be forgotten. May we never take these quiet moments for granted. God bless America.

A: It’s better to be lucky than good.

A: Speckled trout. It’s hard to beat a good perch jerk.

Q: What’s one piece of hunting or fishing gear people spend way too much money on?

A: The price of hunting clothes has gotten outrageous.

Q: What’s one thing you NEVER leave the dock without?

A: Sunscreen. I just don’t always remember to put it on.

Q: What’s worse: mosquitoes, heat, or an inexperienced hunting partner?

A: Skeeters!

Q: If you could only hunt OR fish for the rest of your life, which one are you choosing?

A: Tough question, but I’ll have to go with hunting.

A: Dougie Fresh, by a long shot.

A: Hunting.

Q: What’s worse: mosquitoes, heat, or an inexperienced hunting partner?

A: Born and raised in South Louisiana, I can say the heat does suck, mainly because our humidity is always so high. But it’s something we learn to deal with.

An inexperienced hunting partner is usually someone new to the hobby, and I enjoy introducing new people to the outdoors. I’m also very patient with it.

So my answer is definitely mosquitoes. I hate them.

Q: If you could only hunt OR fish for the rest of your life, which one are you choosing?

A: Fishing was my life until I was about 16. Then I switched over to hunting and haven’t looked back.
I still really enjoy going fishing a few times a year with friends, but hunting is definitely my favorite hobby.

A: I think they all go hand in hand, but as Paw Paw always said, “It’s better to be lucky than good.”

A: Freshwater: sac-au-lait. Saltwater: cobia. As far as catching goes, I just like to feel my rod get pulled on.

A: Although I love to fish, if I had to choose, I would pick hunting. It’s hard to top a cold, dreary January day in the duck blind or deer stand.

A: Captain Jacob is probably the most mechanically inclined. However, Captain Doug has a special kind of Cajun ingenuity.

Heavenly Father, watch over every hunter, guide, and captain as they journey through Louisiana’s marshes and waterways.
Grant them wisdom, steady hands, safe passage, and protection from every danger they may face.
Through the intercession of Saint Christopher, patron saint of travelers, guard all who travel by land and water.
During hurricane season, place Your loving protection over our homes, families, communities, and coastlines.
Calm the winds, quiet the waters, and keep destructive storms far from our beloved state.
Bless this alligator season with fellowship, gratitude, and safe returns home. Amen.
