Sometimes the best way to increase swingweight... is by making the grip lighter.

Many golfers assume the only way to increase swingweight is by adding lead tape or heavier weights to the clubhead. While that certainly works, it isn't always the best solution.

For this build, the amount of weight required at the head would have significantly changed the club's feel and performance. Instead, we achieved the target swingweight by installing Winn DriTac Lite grips.

By reducing weight at the grip end, we were able to increase the club's effective swingweight while preserving the head's original characteristics. The result? A club that feels balanced, performs as intended, and doesn't carry unnecessary weight where it doesn't belong.

Every gram matters in a properly built golf club. Swingweight isn't about making a club heavier—it's about creating the right balance for the golfer.

At Top Gun Custom Golf, we don't guess. Every build is measured, tested, and built to your exact specifications.

Swing speed alone does NOT determine shaft flex.

One of the biggest myths in golf fitting is that there's a magic swing speed that automatically means you need a Regular, Stiff, or X-Stiff shaft. It simply doesn't work that way.

A proper shaft recommendation depends on much more than just clubhead speed, including:

• Tempo – Do you have a smooth, gradual transition or an aggressive one?
• Swing style – Everyone loads the shaft differently.
• Wrist lag and release – When and how you release the club has a huge impact on shaft performance.
• Strength and athleticism – Two golfers with the same swing speed can load a shaft completely differently.
• Impact delivery – Ball flight, launch, spin, and strike location all tell a bigger story than speed alone.

As I tell most of my clients during their fittings, I've fit golfers many swinging 90 mph and under into X-Stiff shafts because of how they load the club, and others swinging 110 mph who perform better in a Stiff shaft because of their smooth tempo.

The best shaft isn't the one your swing speed says you should play—it's the one that helps you deliver the club consistently and produce your best ball flight. An open mind is needed to be properly fit, do not go into your fitting thinking you need something particular. If you WANT something then you will always make a different swing with what you want rather than giving the same swing a chance with what would fit you better.

Get fit based on your swing, not just a number on a chart.

How Head Weight Changes the Way a Golf Shaft Performs

A golf shaft does not perform by itself. It reacts to the entire club.

One of the biggest factors that changes how a shaft feels and performs is the weight of the clubhead. You may be fit into a specific shaft with a specific head, at a specific head weight, length, and swing weight. But if that head weight changes after the fitting, the shaft will not react exactly the same way.

That is why a shaft that felt perfect during a fitting can feel different once weight is added, removed, or changed in the head.

The Shaft Reacts to the Weight at the End of It

During the swing, the shaft is constantly loading, unloading, bending, twisting, and recovering. The clubhead is the weight at the end of that shaft, and that weight has a major effect on how the shaft moves.

If the head gets heavier, the shaft has more load pulling on it.

If the head gets lighter, the shaft has less load pulling on it.

That change can affect feel, timing, launch, spin, face delivery, and strike consistency.

What Happens When the Head Is Too Light?

When a head is too light, many players lose the feeling of where the clubhead is during the swing. The shaft may not load the same way it did during the fitting, and the club can feel firmer or harder to time.

A lighter head can make the shaft feel more rigid because there is less weight pulling on the shaft during the swing. The golfer may start to swing harder just to feel the clubhead, which can lead to inconsistent contact and poor timing.

Common issues with a head that is too light can include:

Less awareness of the clubhead

A shaft that feels firmer than expected

Inconsistent tempo

Lower launch or weaker contact

Difficulty squaring the face consistently

A club that feels good on paper may not perform correctly if the head weight is too light for the player.

What Happens When the Head Is Too Heavy?

When a head is too heavy, the shaft may load more than intended. The club can start to feel softer, more active, or even sluggish through the swing.

A heavier head can make the shaft bend more, which may change how the club releases into the ball. For some players, that can create timing problems. The club may feel harder to control, the face may arrive differently, and the player may struggle to repeat the same delivery.

Common issues with a head that is too heavy can include:

The shaft feeling softer or more active

A club that feels slow or heavy during the swing

Higher spin or inconsistent launch

Timing issues through transition and impact

Difficulty controlling face angle

A heavier head is not automatically bad, but it has to match the player and the shaft.

The Same Shaft Can Feel Different in Two Different Heads

This is one of the most important things golfers need to understand.

The same exact shaft can feel different when installed in two different heads if the head weights are not the same.

A shaft that feels stable in one driver head may feel softer in a heavier head. That same shaft may feel firmer in a lighter head. The shaft did not change, but the load being applied to the shaft changed.

That is why head weight matters so much in a proper fitting and build.

Swing Weight Is Part of the Feel

Swing weight is not the total weight of the club. It is a measurement of how heavy the clubhead feels during the swing.

When head weight increases, swing weight usually increases.

When head weight decreases, swing weight usually decreases.

That change affects how the golfer feels the club and how the shaft reacts. A few grams of head weight may not sound like much, but in club building, small changes can make a noticeable difference.

A driver, fairway wood, hybrid, or iron that is just a few swing weight points off can feel completely different than what the player was fit into.

A Fitting Is Based on a Complete Build

When you are fit into a shaft, you are not just being fit into a shaft name and flex.

You are being fit into a complete setup:

Clubhead

Head weight

Shaft

Length

Grip

Swing weight

Overall feel

Change the head weight, and the fitting changes.

That does not always mean the shaft is wrong, but it does mean the shaft is now reacting to a different build than the one that worked during the fitting.

The Bottom Line

A golf shaft is designed to react to the load placed on it. The weight of the clubhead plays a major role in that reaction.

If the head is too light, the shaft may feel firmer, harder to load, and harder to time.

If the head is too heavy, the shaft may feel softer, more active, or sluggish.

The right shaft has to be matched with the right head weight, length, grip, and swing weight. That is why custom fitting and custom building have to work together.

At Top Gun Custom Golf, we do not just fit the shaft. We make sure the final build matches the fitting.

Because when the head weight changes, the shaft changes too.
