25 years ago, I was fresh out of college, living by myself in Manhattan and pretty innocent to the ways of the world.
Then September 11 happened.
I still remember so much from that time. The shock and devastation. The smell that seemed to linger. But I also remember the feeling of people coming together.
I was humbled by the bravery people displayed in their selfless acts of service. People sacrificing their lives to help complete strangers.
As a whole, it felt like people were looking out for each other. That despite our differences, we were going through something together and would face it together. It was something you could almost feel in the air.
What stayed with me was that when we go through something incredibly difficult, whether as individuals or as a nation, it isn’t hate and division that help us heal. It’s love, connection, and people showing up for one another.
25 years later, that’s still what I want to remember and focus on.
Never forget. ❤️
