Why does my toddler tense up every time I move them in the water?

It is usually not the skill. It is the transition.

Every time you shift a child from belly to back, or guide their ears under, or move them into the next position, you are either building trust or breaking it. Most people never think about those in between moments at all.

Here is what helps most. A universal grip.

Both hands stay just underneath the armpits on either side of the child. Thumbs on the back when they are on their belly. Thumbs slide under the armpits when they roll to their back. That is the only change you ever make.

No fumbling. No repositioning. No pause where the child suddenly feels unsupported and starts to panic.

When your hands are steady and your movements are smooth, the child stays relaxed. And a relaxed child learns faster than a tense one every single time.

Save this for your next session in the pool.

How do you make swim lessons go smoother with a toddler?

The answer is almost always in the transitions. Not the drills. Not the skills. The moments in between.

How you move a child from their belly to their back. How you guide their ears into the water. How you take them from one skill directly into the next without breaking their trust.

In this video I show the universal grip I use for almost everything in the water.

Both hands sit just underneath the armpits on each side of the child. When they are on their belly your thumbs rest on their back. When you transition them to their back your thumbs slide underneath the armpits. That is the only adjustment you ever need to make.

The beauty of this grip is you never fumble around repositioning your hands between skills. Your hands already know where to go. And when your hands are confident the child feels it immediately.

Think of it like dancing. A great dancer does not just nail each move. They flow between each move in a way that feels effortless.

Swim lessons work exactly the same way. Rough or rushed transitions create tension. Smooth ones keep a child relaxed and trusting, which means everything you teach them actually lands.

Save this one for the next time you are in the water with your little one.

👇 What part of the transition does your child resist the most? Belly to back, ears in the water, or going under? Tell me in the comments and I will help you work through it.

When teaching children to float,

moments like this are going to happen. Sometimes, we have to give them the opportunity to figure it out on their own so they can learn the proper way to do it. With patience, practice, and guidance, they’ll build confidence and become more comfortable in the water. 💦
