๐ 50 YEARS AGO, a major milestone for Pittsburgh adaptive sports occurred.
On April 5, 1976, a team from Pittsburgh rolled onto the court at the Pennsylvania Rehabilitation Center in Johnstown, PA for the very first time โ facing off against the Johnstown Flood City Rollers in what would become the first chapter of an incredible story.
From that single basketball game, the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers have grown into something far bigger than anyone could have imagined:
๐ 1977 โ Became a registered non-profit
๐ 1978 โ Joined the National Wheelchair Basketball Association
๐ 1980s โ Added track & swimming programs
๐ 1992 โ Expanded with a wheelchair rugby team
๐ด 2010s โ Grew again with a handcycle team
Fifty years. Countless athletes whose lives have been changed by the power of adaptive sport.
Hereโs to the pioneers who showed up that day in Johnstown, and to every Steelwheeler who has carried that legacy forward. The best is still ahead. ๐๐ค
